Baja California is a rare destination that offers a great getaway year long. Peak time for travel is when weather is temperate in the low 20ºc range and whale watching opportunities are at their best (late-November to April). This also includes the festive holiday and New Year period. Cool temperatures are ideal for desert adventures and hiking and boating for wildlife viewing and island exploration. Summer (April to September) can be hot and humid but the beaches are less crowded. Summer waters are ideal for snorkelling and diving. Hurricanes are much less common than in the Caribbean, but it is something to be aware of for September and October travel which is considered low season.
Baja is blessed with two marine life rich oceans; the Sea of Cortez to the east has a warmer sea temperature than the more exposed than the Pacific Ocean to the west. In the summer the breeze coming from the Pacific is a blessing. For surfing, waves break on the eastern side of the peninsula March to October and on the Pacific west November to March. The most popular summer breaks start in San Jose and extend up to the Eastern Cape making Los Cabos an excellent base. In the winter the best breaks are south of Todos Santos at Cerritos Beach.

The One&Only is a tropical oasis nestled between San Jose Del Cabo and the corridor of hotels leading to Cabo San Lucas. Once home to the president of the state of Baja, the extensive grounds have had over 70 years to mature making this one of the greenest and lushest gardens in Los Cabos. All rooms have full ocean views and even the lead in will easily accommodate a small family with a comfy sofa bed and full size king beds. For families looking for more space there are lots of connecting options, or for the ultimate family getaway the villas are spectacular, with private infinity pools over looking the sea of Cortez. Every detail has been meticulously thought through, from the multiple factors of sun cream dotted around the resort to the miniature childrens sun-beds over looking the family pool.
The One & Only lives up to its name in every respect, however the biggest asset has to be the outstanding service, the staff are a credit to the hotel and go above and beyond in every respect to service guests needs. With a ratio of over 5 staff per guest nothing is too much trouble. Furthermore this is one of the few hotels in the area with a swimmable beach, complimentary activities include paddle boards, hobby cats, kayaks and snorkelling equipment perfect for enjoying the extensive marine life on your very own doorstep. The One & Only really is the perfect choice for both families and couples.

From the moment you enter through the wrought iron gates the beautiful estate of Paraiso you feel lost in an oasis of palms, bougainvillea, frangipani, hibiscus and stunning vivid gardens. The low slung hacienda style Suites with Mexican accents and stunning sea views are the perfect place to enjoy your holiday. Over 800 staff discreetly tend to your every need and children will love the activities, the relaxed kids club which organizes activities for children from 4 11 years of age, various dining options and the beach and space that the resort offers for families. There is a slightly more private side to the hotel for couples with some adult restaurant and pool options and their Ocean Front One Bedroom Casita Suites with pools and hot tubs are truly spectacular. Infinity pools blending with azure sea and sleeping at night to the waves stealing onto the shore was a true joy. 4 Tennis courts, Yoga, their own yacht, golf and a magnificent Spa all make this resort a joy to spend time in. The footprint is huge and the hotel spills gently through stunning gardens and palms giving the white hacienda style buildings a real feeling of place. Everywhere you go smiling staff seem to materialize beside you asking if you need anything. Whether you dine at Aqua, Seared, Suviche, Breeze or a private cooking lesson in the herb garden the choices are endless and the views a stunning backdrop to the delicious food. The One & Only Palmilla is perfectly located to explore the area of Cabo San Jose, Cabos San Lucas or Todos Santos and the hotel can recommend excellent local restaurants if you would like to eat out for a change of scene in local Cabo San Jose.

The One&Only Palmilla is nestled on a private stretch of ocean at the end of the exclusive Palmilla estate. Enter through the resort gates and the hotel's grounds are green and lush, filled with swaying palms, birds of paradise and other tropical fruits and flowers. This lushness contrasts with the mountains and rocky coves of the Pacific Ocean to feel like you've arrived at a true oasis. While the One&Only might be a larger resort of 173 guestrooms, it genuinely doesn't feel like a large resort and this is partly because of the clever way in which it is laid out (you cannot get lost) and the warm and attentive staff who greet you wherever you may go.
There is a central heart to the resort, where you'll find the concierge and reception, Breeze Restaurant for breakfast with an ocean view, a library lounge and signature restaurants Seared and Suviche and a pool reserved for adults. Stroll south from here and you'll find secluded single-level casita suites with plunge pools and terrace day beds overlooking the ocean ideal for couples; or stroll north and find family suites with lagoon pools, AGUA by Larbi restaurant, Kids Only Club and of course the beach with its beach club. This is one of the few swimmable beaches in Cabo with cabanas and SUP, boogie boards, snorkels to borrow and Tropic surf school where you'll find surf pro Matt to help you ride the waves!
One&Only is a resort that can appeal to everyone due to its beautifully designed suites with Mexican accents, its hugely attentive and warm service and smiles and accommodation that can work for everyone. While One&Only will always appeal to families because of its incredible facilities but as we found, it also has huge appeal to adults travelling alone.
As a cure for a long flight, we booked into the award-winning spa and it doesn't get much better than this one. Aside from cool services like the OBO Salon from Los Angeles - the main Spa is ESPA with chic indoor and outdoor relaxation rooms and secluded treatment rooms dotted throughout tropical gardens so you can happily spend the day here. A 60-minute deep tissue massage was a dreamy way to unwind after a flight, followed by relaxing in the spas hot and cold plunge pools. The spa shop and the resort's boutique are also irresistibly beach chic. I would recommend you fly with an empty suitcase when you come!
Dining at the resort is also part of the One & Only experience; on night one we dined at AGUA by Larbi, savouring delicate tuna-sashimi wrapped in avocado like a sushi-roll without rice, fresh catch of the day the Parrot Fish and a dessert that looked almost too good to eat - a coconut ice-cream sculpted with a chocolate exterior to look like a fresh coconut just fallen from a tree. All this was paired with wines from Valle de Guadelupe in Baja Sur, where the sommelier matched his recommendations to our order. Set to be the new Sonoma Valley, we picked up tips on the best producers to look out for on the rest of our trip. Our favourite breakfast by the pool consisted of watermelon and ginger juice and tropical coconut and banana pastries. During dinner at Suviche we watched the chef prepare sashimi and California rolls to perfection in the open kitchen. Each evening there is live music in the restaurants; all original and creating a relaxed holiday ambience.
Service here is exemplary, with more staff on hand than is imaginable; nothing is too much trouble. Pre-dinner cocktails can be prepared from your private in-room bar, dinner can be organised in a private beach cove or a delicious picnic prepared for your day trip. After a day out with our guide snorkelling in Cabo Pulmo and helping to release baby turtles from the turtle sanctuary, being welcomed back to the resort in the evening felt like coming home which is always the sign of a great resort and the reason that Palmilla has so many return guests. We hope we'll return again soon!
One&Only Palmilla dazzles at the original location of the famous Palmilla Resort that hosted luminaries like Jean Harlow, Bing Crosby and Ernest Hemmingway back in the day and more recently Tom Cruise, Oprah and John Travolta. Visitors arrive to a compound built for privacy and with it incredible security gates that open to a promenade driveway of majestic king palms usually see from the window of the in-house Hummer.
The Spanish Colonial details of the historic resort have not been lost on ever-posh One&Only that uses sexy ad campaigns to attract the world's rich under-40 luminaries, through a triple arch porte-cochere leading to the main lobby. The hotel's original infinity edge pool also still exists, seen from the reception overlooking a private beach amongst waterfalls and swim-up bar that's thankfully for adults only.
Recognizable names seem to be a common theme at Palmilla, including its outpost of Market restaurant by Michelin stared chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten in his first foray south of the border. Vongerichten also oversees new Suviche Restaurant and Lounge that specializes in sushi and ceviches by Japan-plucked protegee Nobuo Iwaseya.
