The Tibetan Plateau, a huge elevated plain, stretches itself across all of Tibet (Tibet Autonomous Region) and the Chinese provinces of Qinghai and Gansu. It's a vast and wild expanse peppered with brackish lakes and interspersed with powerful rivers. Home to a distinct culture, the region is a spiritual place that's home to nomadic groups, peaceful monasteries.
The Tibetan Plateau is easily one of the most unique landscapes and experiences in the world. Gansu in China is of particular interest if you want to incorporate Tibetan culture into an itinerary through China. It has a tiny population when compared to other areas and an extraordinary ethnic mix including Hui, Kuzakhs, Mongols and Tibetans. Sandwiched between the Gobi and Tibetan Desert, it offers fast plains of wildflowers and glorious monasteries such as Labrang. It's a fantastic addition to a longer tour through China.
