Good time to visit

Average time to visit

The main season is in January and February, when the weather is hottest and driest. At this time, the animals in the wildlife parks tend to congregate more around the watercourses, making them easier to spot.

Northern and eastern Kenya temperatures vary from highs of up to 40°C during the day to less than 20°C at night. Rainfall in this area is sparse and, when it does occur, is often in the form of violent storms. July is usually the driest month, and November the wettest.

Itinerary

This trip has been designed to take you on an exploration through the lesser known safari areas of Kenya. First focussing on the spectacular Laikipia Plateau, you will observe endemic wildlife such as the Reticulated giraffe. Feel the thrill of a three-night walking safari, which will engage all your senses as you are immersed in the surrounding nature. Ending with a bang in the world renowned Masai Mara to get the ultimate ‘Big Five’ game experience.

  1. Fly to Nairobi

  2. Days 1-2: Nairobi

Touching down in Nairobi International Airport, you’ll be whisked away to the Tamarind Tree Hotel, so you can catch up on some sleep before your safari adventure begins the following morning.

Accommodation: Tamarind Tree Hotel (1 night)

  3. Days 2-5: Laikipia

Feeling revitalised and raring to go, your driver will pick you up and transfer you just 10 minutes away to Nairobi Wilson Airport, where you will hop on a light aircraft flight to Nanyuki, the gateway to Laikipia. This is an area of untamed, rugged beauty and holds certain species of wildlife endemic to this region, such as the Grevy Zebra. From Nanyuki you’ll be driven to El Karama Lodge, your home for the next 3 nights. El Karama is in the heart of a private wildlife conservancy teeming with wildlife. After settling into your private cottage and relishing on a delicious lunch, produced from El Karama’s farm, you’ll head out on your afternoon game drive. . Your guide will scan the ground for animal tracks and signs of wildlife which makes the experience even more rewarding when you come across a herd of elephants or a pride of lions. As the day begins to darken, the guide will turn on the spotlight and look for the rare, nocturnal species such as aardvark and bush babies. Take a moment to sit back and listen to the sounds of the wild after dark.
Your following days at El Karama will be brimming with new experiences. Fly camp under the stars in “tree tents” giving you the feeling you are floating in the air and fall asleep under a blanket of stars, hearing the rumble of elephants in the distance. Canter into the limitless landscapes on horseback and view the wildlife from a totally unique perspective. Laze by the eco pool and gaze out over the Aberdares mountain range and the Ewaso Nyiro River, lined with acacia trees.

Accommodation: El Karama Eco Lodge (3 nights)

  4. Days 5-8: Laikipia

After breakfast out in the bush you will game drive to the starting point of your Karisia Walking safari adventure. You will be hosted by three Samburu tribesmen, so their knowledge of the land is fascinating. Accompanying you are a group of camels who help move the mobile camp day to day. Let your excitement wander in this vast wilderness, tracking animals from tiny field mice and mongoose, right up to the tracks of elephants. The average day of walking can be between 10 and 15 kilometres, but this can be tailor-made for you. When you your legs need a break, hop on top of a camel and the higher vantage point lets you scan ahead for the more elusive animals.
The beauty of this walking safari is the way in which you will be truly immersed in nature as your senses are fine tuned. There are plenty of natural activities you can experience along the way; cool off in the trickling streams of water as you traverse the wilderness or take a break and try your hand at fishing. As the day comes to an end, your camp will seem to miraculously appear as your Samburu guides walk ahead and set up ready for you to unwind and drink a cold beer by the campfire. After a hearty, freshly cooked meal, fall asleep in your tent to the sounds of the bush and the crackling of the campfire.

Accommodation: Karisia Walking Safaris (3 nights)

  5. Days 8-11: Maasai Mara

A big game safari awaits. After a farewell breakfast with your hosts you will catch a light aircraft flight to the Masai Mara. As you fly over the Mara, the landscapes change drastically as vast, open plains dotted with animals unravel before your eyes. As you land in the Mara North Conservancy, you may even spot a herd of wildebeest or zebra peering over at you. Meeting your guide, you’ll hop into your open safari vehicle and  game drive to Offbeat Mara Camp, an authentic bush camp with all the luxury comforts you need.  The guiding here is exceptional so your game drives will be an experience to remember forever; track the elusive leopard and feel your excitement building as you finally spot one laying majestically in the shade of an acacia tree. The guides know a pride of lions that have now become the “Offbeat Pride” so if you are desperate to see these majestic animals, this camp will not disappoint.  There are other activities you can enjoy here if you’d like to get out of the vehicle. Float along the mystical Mara River in a hot air balloon with an eyeline view of the birds of prey that perch on the treetops, encased by the early morning mist. Top this off with a champagne breakfast out on the savannah – a memory to cherish for a lifetime.
