Best time to Visit

Good time to visit

Average time to visit

Japan kicks off its year with cold winter days and the odd snowfall. Although temperatures occasionally drop below freezing, winter (December to February) is usually reasonable. Spring (March to May) brings pleasant, warm days, and, of course, cherry blossoms – early April is probably the best time to view the blooms. Summer (June to August) is hot and muggy. Late June can see torrential rains. The temperature and humidity are at their worst in August. Apart from spring, autumn (late September to November) is the most pleasant season as temperatures cool down to a cosy level and days are often clear and fine. Autumn also means the return of the dramatic foliage season, when the parks and green areas of the city mellow into varying hues of orange and red.

Japan is the perfect honeymoon destination, full of exotic mystery, with something new to discover around each corner. This beautiful itinerary allows you to experience the country at a relaxed pace from the bright lights of Tokyo, the intertwining lanes of the Gion district in Kyoto, fascinating Kanazawa and of course a stay in a traditional Japanese Inn or Ryokan, the ultimate Japanese experience.

  1. Days 1-4: Tokyo

Starting in Tokyo you’ll have three nights to explore this incredible city. There is an undeniable electric energy and buzzing atmosphere in Tokyo making it a great place to start your trip. Streets full of buildings designed by award winning architects rub shoulders with quiet alleyways and shanty bars and centuries old temples contrast with the modern fashions of Harajuku. We have included a private guided day for you with public transport on your first day in the city allowing you to whizz around the city to all of the highlights. Not only is this a super-efficient way to get around but your guide can help you get to grips with how everything works for when you want to head out and explore on your own.

    Accommodation: Andaz Tokyo (3 nights)

  2. Days 4-7: Kyoto

Then it is on to Kyoto which you will reach by a direct bullet train taking just over two hours. Kyoto is the old imperial capital of Japan and the cultural centre for the country, so there is plenty to do and see here! With beautiful gardens, temples and shrines you’ll be able to see a more ancient side to Japan alongside a vastly modernising city with a range of incredible restaurants, quirky bars and cool coffee scene.  Again, we have included a day of guiding to all the main cultural highlights so that you can uncover the interesting history of the region. Late afternoon into early evening we suggest heading to Gion, the Geisha district, which is beautiful and perfect for a romantic walk along the river’s edge and through the beautifully preserved side streets. You may also be lucky to see a Geisha on her way to an evening appointment as you wander through.

Accommodation: Hyatt Regency Kyoto (3 nights)

  3. Days 7-9: Kanazawa

After three nights in Kyoto you will head up to Kanazawa on the west coast of Japan, again by bullet train. Not as much on the tourist trail, Kanazawa has a calmer, more peaceful atmosphere. Enjoy strolling through Kenroku-en garden, famed as one of the most beautiful in Japan and venture into Omicho Market to test out some of the fantastic seafood that Kanazawa is so well known for. There is also a beautifully preserved Geisha and Samurai district where you’ll almost feel as you’ve stepped back in time and on your full day of guiding that we have included for you, the history of this region will be wonderfully brought to life.

Accommodation: Hotel Nikko Kanazawa (2 nights)

  4. Days 9-11: Takayama

From Kanazawa, with your guide and private chauffeur, you’ll drive into the heart of Japan through the Japanese Alps to Takayama. On the way you’ll have the chance to visit Shirakawago en route. This protected UNESCO mountain village has a lovely local farmers market and is famed for its traditional Gassho-zukuri farmhouses that have been designed to withstand heavy snow. In Takyama itself you can spend time exploring the historical Sanmachi area, full of old merchant houses and sake breweries and if there is time visit the float festival museum of Takayama Yatai Kaikan. In Takayama you will stay at a traditional ryokan, where you will have your own private onsen or hot spring bath and be treated to an incredible nine course Kaiseki dinner, with each course presented more beautiful than the last and served in the comfort of your room for the ultimate romantic private dining experience.

    Accommodation: Wanosato Takayama (2 nights)

  5. Days 11-12: Tokyo

Then you’ll head back to Tokyo by bullet train with a change in Nagoya taking just over four hours for the final night of your honeymoon. Enjoy evening cocktails at one of the many trendy cocktails bars and treat yourself to a night on the town at one of the best restaurants in the city, which we can of course recommend, overlooking the never-ending twinkling lights of Tokyo.
