Best time to Visit

Good time to visit

Average time to visit

Rajasthan is known as the desert state. It is largely hot and dry throughout the year, making it a great destination to get away during cold winter months.

Summer in Rajasthan extends from April to June. It’s the hottest season so not ideal for travel, although early April is a good time to get great value for money if you don’t mind the heat. In western Rajasthan temperatures may soar, particularly in May and June, so we'd suggest avoiding Jaisalmer and the Thar Desert at this time.

The monsoon season usually runs from July to September. The temperature drops slightly, and humidity increases. During this period 90% of the rain Rajasthan occurs, although in reality Rajasthan never receives much rainfall. Lakes and rivers will be higher and there's more colour to the landscape.

October to March is the best time to travel to Rajasthan. Expect warm and sunny weather, perfect for exploring and relaxing. Please note that hotels are at their busiest over the Christmas and New Year period. December and January can have very cool mornings and evening and we suggest taking some warm clothing. Whilst temperatures in the desert areas are always hot in the daytime, they become some of the coolest areas of the state once the sun goes down. It’s also normal to expect some fog in the major cities of northern Rajasthan in December and January.

Ask Shatrujeet to identify any of the bird life on the Shapura Estate. He really does have an encyclopaedic knowledge and is happy to take guests on walking tours of the area. A joy if you enjoy nature.

Book the local tailor to make you a made to measure outfit in two days.

If you go for evening sundowners at Dikhola Fort, wait 5 or 10 minutes after sun down to watch an enormous flurry of bats leave the Fort. There must have been thousands flying through the air when I was there.

Shahpura Bagh is a beautiful boutique heritage property located in rural Rajasthan in between Jaipur and Udaipur. This wonderful garden estate is surrounded by shimmering lakes and comprises two residences with light and airy suites and rooms.

Shahpura Bagh is 120 years old and was once the home of the rulers of Shahpura. It's set midway between Jaipur and Udaipur amid 45-acres of garden and pasture surrounded by lakes making it a very special, peaceful little oasis.

With its idyllic and unspoilt rural setting, it's definitely worth spending a couple of nights here for its restful ambience, which is the perfect antidote if you're on a hectic, city-based itinerary. While here, be sure to head out and explore nearby local villages and get well away from the main tourist routes.

The dining room is housed in the main building and it's here that you'll enjoy your meals during the colder months. At other times, dining is an al fresco affair, usually in the garden in the warm sunshine or romantic glow of candlelight beneath the stars. The cuisine is largely continental and Indian inspired and freshly made using organic ingredients, many of which are sourced from the property's own vegetable garden. You can choose between buffet-style dining or prix fixe. Room service is available and special private dinners can also be arranged.

All rooms have air-conditioning, an overhead fan, and an en-suite bathroom with a bath and shower. The property has been adapted from a family home so the rooms vary in shape, size and design, which only adds to its overall charm.

Shahpura Bagh is a really wonderful retreat away from the big cities of Rajasthan. I stayed here for two nights and had a fantastic time. Firstly, the property itself is beautiful; located in the village of Shahpura, the property consists of only a handful of rooms, each of which are exceptionally bright and spacious and very well-equipped with modern facilities.

There are numerous activities offered at Shahpura Bagh that are well worth getting involved in, including guided tours through the village and local farm, evening visit to Dikhola Fort for sundowners and cycle rides. There's also a beautiful pool at the back of the property to cool off in and a route through the property to walk around; you're sure to hear and see plenty of peacocks.

But, the main attraction of the property are the wonderful hosts and owners. They really do welcome you with open arms and provide fantastic insight into the village of Shahpura, as well as Rajasthan. The property isn't really suitable for those 5* properties throughout their stay, but if you're looking to get off the beaten track, then this is a terrific choice.

What I loved about Shapura was the hospitality I received from the host family, who genuinely seemed interested in sitting down and talking to the guests. I also really liked the fact that staying at Shahpura Bagh was a great opportunity to explore village life and have a more off-the- beaten-track experience whilst exploring Rajasthan.
