Best time to Visit

Good time to visit

Average time to visit

Zambia has a moderate to sub-tropical climate with three distinct seasons: from November to March is the Emerald, or the rainy season, April to July is Zambia's winter, when the weather is cool and dry, and August to October is summer, when the weather is hot and dry. In terms of game-viewing, the drier months, meaning a higher concentration of game at the permanent water sources, are a superb time to visit. Alternatively come for some superb bird-watching at the end of the rains.

With varied topography across Malawi, from the high mountains to the Shire Valley below 180m, Malawi has very varied weather. The Shire Valley is tropical with high temperatures and humidity. The rainy season is roughly from December to March, in which the wettest districts are the mountains in the south. It begins to be dry again throughout April and May, in which the days between May through to Novemeber are clear and warm, making it the best time to visit.

Itinerary

Journey to Zambia’s renowned South Luangwa National Park, famed for impressive elephant and leopard populations, with a stay in an authentic camp positioned along the banks of the Luangwa River, which elephants congregate around frequently. This safari is exceptional value for money and is topped off with a stay on a secluded tropical island off Lake Malawi, where you can enjoy a myriad of water sports on the glistening, crystal clear water.

  1. Fly to Lusaka

  2. Days 1-5: South Luangwa National Park

On arrival into Lusaka, Zambia’s capital city, feel your excitement build as you board a light aircraft to Mfuwe, the gateway to the South Luangwa National Park. Your destination and home for the next 4 nights is Flatdogs Camp, located along the banks of the Luangwa River, just outside of the national park. After settling into camp and watching a herd of jovial elephants ambling down the banks of the river, you will journey out on your first game drive. Feel your adrenaline build as you are driven into the park in your open safari vehicle and watch the nature unfold around you. The park is famed for elephant and leopard sightings and your expert guide will track these majestic animals, getting you involved too. Being in a leopard’s territory and knowing that a pair of striking amber eyes may be looking out at you from the shadow of a tree is enough to set anyone’s pulse racing and you’ll watch in complete awe when you come across one of these beautiful animals.

Your time here will be spent game driving in the mornings and afternoons, with the option to laze by the pool with an ice-cold drink in between. You will also have the chance to venture out on a walking safari; this is the ultimate nature walk as all your senses awaken and you fully immerse yourself in the wilderness. Evenings are spent enjoying a hearty meal before gathering around a crackling campfire under the night sky brimming with stars.

    Accommodation: Flatdogs Camp (4 nights)

  3. Days 5-12: Lake Malawi

This morning after more wildlife encounters, you’ll be taken back to Mfuwe in time for your light aircraft flight to Lilongwe in Malawi. From here you’ll be met by your driver and privately transferred to your island home for the next 7 nights, Mumbo Island Lodge. Mumbo has a magical location on a secluded, tropical island surrounded by pristine, crystal-clear water. Your week here can be as laidback or as energetic as you wish. Laze in the hammock draped from your thatched chalet, overlooking the lake with a beer in hand. Take to the glistening water on kayak and explore hidden coves and caves. Hike the lush trails of the island and meander through the Miombo forest. Learn to scuba dive and explore the giant granite boulders and array of vibrantly coloured fish. Or sink into serenity on the beach, listening to the sounds of the waves gently lapping the shore. The choice is yours.
