Robin Pope Safaris Mobile Camp is open from June to October.
Zambia has a moderate to sub-tropical climate with three distinct seasons: from November to March is the Emerald, or the rainy season, April to July is Zambia's winter, when the weather is cool and dry, and August to October is summer, when the weather is hot and dry. In terms of game-viewing, the drier months, meaning a higher concentration of game at the permanent water sources, are a superb time to visit. Alternatively come for some superb bird-watching at the end of the rains.
We design each itinerary around you, so this suggested itinerary is a starting point that we can tweak or transform into something completely bespoke to you. Call us on 020 3993 5269 to start planning your holiday.
Itinerary
Robin Pope’s mobile walking safari is a superb set-departure trip, led by one of the company’s top guides. Explore the stunning South Luangwa National Park on foot to experience one of the best wilderness experiences in Zambia. Remote and wild, this trip takes you to some of the furthest reaches of the South Luangwa where your guide will teach you how to track animals and where you’ll learn about the habitats and biomes of the bush.

Days 1-2: South Luangwa National Park
Your holiday begins as you are met by your Robin Pope guide, experienced and knowledgeable you will spend the next seven days learning all about the bush. Jump in a game vehicle and enjoy the colourful local scenes of villages and the vibrancy of the bush as your guide takes you to Nkwali Camp. With an enviable location on Robin’s private island on the Luangwa River, Nkwali is perfectly situated to start an adventure in the South Luangwa. Depending on arrival time, enjoy lunch looking out onto the lagoon and an afternoon game drive; or afternoon tea and a night drive. Getting immersed in the bush on a drive is the perfect way to begin a safari in Zambia.
Accommodation: Nkwali Camp (1 night)

Days 2-7: South Luangwa National Park
Your next five nights will be spent on a mobile safari in a remote and exclusive walking camp situated in the northernmost reaches of the South Luangwa, bordering the Mupamadzi River (the camp is often called Mupamadzi Camp, after the river). Game up here is prolific and varied - with a chance of viewing lion, leopard, elephant, the endemic Cookson's wildebeest and large herds of buffalo.
During the course of the mobile, the camp will move at least twice, if not three times, dependent on the movements of the game and densities in each particular area. The camp is comfortable with en-suite tents, bucket showers and long-drop loos. As you set off on your morning walk, the camp staff leap into action, packing up camp and then drive ahead, in order to set up camp just in time for your return. As the camp is generally located on the edge of the perennial Mupamadzi river, your walk could end with a barefoot walk across the river back to camp. Your evening will generally be spent relaxing around the camp fire with a cool drink before a delicious and hearty dinner.

Days 7-8: South Luangwa National Park
After five nights exploring the Mupamadzi area, the safari then heads back down into the Nsefu sector of the Luangwa - the only part of the park to be on the eastern side of the Luangwa River. This is a special area, and is host to Tena Tena and Nsefu, RPS's two bush camps. Walking and game drives are on offer here, and a trip to the Buca Buca Lagoon is a must - a superb area for high concentrations of game. Here the safari ends with a stay at either Tena Tena or Nsefu, however your holiday can easily be extended to continue to explore this magnificent part of the world.
