There are two very distinct seasons at the Victoria Falls, the wet/flood season and the dry season. These seasons do not reflect the quantity of rain, rather reflect the volume of flow of the Zambezi River. From around March through to July the river surges in size as the rainfall in Angola and Zambia from months before swells the current. The falls are at their most dramatic at this time of year with huge columns of spray. The nights are cold and the days warm at this time of year. From around September to January the water levels drop, the falls are more accessible and views are clearer as the flow can drop in volume by 90%. It is worth noting that the rains come from late October through to February, this combined with high heat, 40 celsius or more, in October and November, causes high levels of humidity.

Sindabezi is a private island paradise nestled in the waters of the Zambezi River, upstream from the Victoria Falls. It is a luxurious bush camp on its own little island, with superb views over the surrounding river and plenty of activities on offer!

Sindabezi is an idyllic, exclusive camp on a private island and is part of the Tongabezi group. From here the Victoria Falls can comfortably be explored and guests have a wealth of experiences and activities to choose from during the day only to return to a tranquil haven at night.

Sindabezi provides superb views over the flood plain and an opportunity to see wildlife in the surrounding national park. The unique design of the five tented chalets allows close-up encounters with all the sights and sounds of the river and the creatures who live in and around it.

From the south side of the island there is one chalet which has a wonderful view across the bubbling channels of the Zambezi River to the Victoria Falls National Park, where game such as elephant, impala and wildebeest come to quench their thirst on the banks of the river. At night guests can opt to enjoy the first round of sundowners in their large private bubble bath – with piping hot water courtesy of the state of the art solar heaters. On the northern banks of the island are two more chalets with solar heated showers, and distinctive ‘loos with a view’ set along private wooden walkways. Although the chalets are perfectly secluded, the island is also ideal for families or groups who would like to consider a private booking.

There is a stunning ‘Honeymoon’ chalet situated on a secluded sandy shore at the end of the island. The brand new, old fashioned claw-foot bath is perfect for two and solar panelling provides hot water and ambient bedside lighting. The entire Sindabezi Island is also romantically lit with traditional hurricane lamps and candles.

Sindabezi has only five open-sided thatched cottages facilities include a sun deck, outside heated shower, canopied bed and a “loo with a view.” All the chalets can be altered to have a twin or double bed and there is a delightful secluded honeymoon chalet on its own sandy beach.

Sindabezi Island is not suitable for very young children and permission should be sought before booking.

There is an open-plan central lounge and bar area at Sindabezi Island, and most of the meals are enjoyed under the mesmerising stars.

Most of the activities revolve around the Victoria Falls and there are also opportunities to go game viewing in the Victoria Falls National Park. Guests can tailor their activities to their own requirements, there are guided fishing trips, cultural village walks and sunset river cruises. From Livingstone the options include: Helicopter flights over Victoria Falls, white water rafting, trips to Livingstone Island, trips to Livingstone Museum, micro light flights, fishing, abseiling, bunji jumping and tours to Mosi O Tunya National Park and Chobe National Park.

Rose Gemmell (Staff)

This must be one of the most unique lodges in Zambia. Sindabezi Island is the sister lodge of Tongabezi and is reached by a 20 minute boat ride from Tongabezi. With only four rooms, it is perfect for honeymooners wanting to hide away and the island can also be taken on a private basis making it the perfect option for larger groups. The rooms are total open at the front so you wake with the sun rising over the Zambezi and the sound of the numerous birds calling to one another. The bathroom is also open so you can enjoy a bath with a view. The main area is absolutely beautiful and set in the heart of the island with a tree house platform looking out over the river. This really is the epitome of barefoot paradise.

Five Best Green Retreats This lodge may not be hi-tech but it comes with its own pet hippo Horace. The camp, only 10km above the Victoria Falls on an island in the Zambezi River, has five thatched chalets. Each has one side open to spectacular views of the river. Ten guests is as busy as this tiny, private island gets. Off the grid, candles light up rooms, morning showers are from a bucket and toilets come with a view. By day, there are game drives, canoe trips into the forest and picnic walks; and by night, guests can gather round the fire listening to the roar of distant lions.
