Best time to Visit

Good time to visit

Average time to visit

There are two very distinct seasons at the Victoria Falls, the wet/flood season and the dry season. These seasons do not reflect the quantity of rain, rather reflect the volume of flow of the Zambezi River. From around March through to July the river surges in size as the rainfall in Angola and Zambia from months before swells the current. The falls are at their most dramatic at this time of year with huge columns of spray. The nights are cold and the days warm at this time of year. From around September to January the water levels drop, the falls are more accessible and views are clearer as the flow can drop in volume by 90%. It is worth noting that the rains come from late October through to February, this combined with high heat, 40 celsius or more, in October and November, causes high levels of humidity. The drier months from October to February offer different activities during the lower water level season, such as swimming in the natural rockpool at Livingstone Island, right on the edge of the falls. Whatever the time of year there is plenty to do here and the views from a helicopter or microlight are spectacular whatever the water levels!

Located on the edge of Mosi-Oa-Tunya National Park, Thorntree River Lodge boasts luxurious accommodation on the banks of the Zambezi River, just a short distance from the magnificent Victoria Falls.

Thorntree River Lodge is the newest lodge in the Livingstone area, set to rival Livingstone accommodation with its modern and contemporary design. Inspiration for the lodge has been taken from local culture and customs to maintain an authentic African feel while in keeping with the local environment.

The lodge comprises eight luxury rooms each with their own private deck with plunge pool, offering the perfect respite after a day on the river. The rooms are spacious, light and airy, with relaxing seating areas which can also be made into an extra bed for younger children on special request. My stay at Thorntree was peaceful and relaxing. As we came back to the lodge after the days activities we were greeted by zebra and giraffe just outside of camp. The lodges simple elegance provides the perfect solace after a day of adrenaline activities. Dinner on the deck was delicious and the honking hippos made an excellent table side band! Waking up to the sun rising over the Zambezi River was the perfect way to get me started on the next full day of adventure!
