Thailand’s tropical climate means that the country generally experiences high temperatures and humidity throughout the year, which can split into the hot, cool and rainy seasons. The average temperature ranges from the lowest at round 30°C in December, to the highest at around 36°C between January and April. The best time to visit is between November and February, when the weather is at its best throughout the country. In Central Thailand, rain mostly falls between December and September, whereas in Northern Thailand, the dry seasons is between November and May and the wet season is from June to October. Thailand’s southern parts are split into east and west – the west coast’s wet season is between April and October, whereas on the east coast it is from September to October.

Itinerary

Fly to Bangkok
Day 1-4

Bangkok

This action-packed itinerary begins in Bangkok, once settled into your hotel you can enjoy an evening tour of the city, strolling past the Grand Palace and Wat Pho, spectacularly floodlit at night. Re-visit these iconic monuments the next morning followed by a delicious lunch at the Chao Phraya River. Take some respite from the busy streets of Bangkok and head out to explore the city’s eclectic canals on a longtail boat, stopping to visit famous sites along the way and even feeding the sacred catfish who live in the water. On your last day in Bangkok, drive out to Ayutthaya, Thailand’s ancient 14th century capital, which today is an UNESCO World Heritage City, making sure you stop in the Muslim Quarter to sample some delicious delicacies.

Day 4-6

Chiang Mai

In Chiang Mai you can immerse yourself in Buddhist culture, experiencing a tranquil and mesmerising Buddhist procession on Doi Suthep mountain. Climb the Golden Naga staircase to visit the gleaming pagodas on the top of the hill and take in the beautiful views of the city below. There is plenty more to see in Chiang Mai, including the moss-covered 14th century Wat Umong, with its mysterious underground tunnels. You can also visit the Chiang Mai City Arts Culture Centre and the Three Kings Monument.

Day 6-8

Chiang Rai

Once in the heart of Northern Thailand, it is time to experience local culture. Visit the Lahu community, wandering around watching families cooking dinner and children playing outside. The countryside here is beautiful, authentic and great to explore, with corn fields, bamboo huts and plantations. Learn about the giant catfish that live in the Mekong river, which are the world’s biggest fresh water fish. Local culture continues when you visit the Hmong Tribe, learning how to make handkerchiefs and animal traps.

Day 8-9

On the Mekong

There is plenty to see and do on this two-day cruise to Luang Prabang, including stopping at authentic hill tribe settlements and exploring Pakbeng, a tiny charming town with wooden houses set along a steep road. In the village of Ban Baw, you will learn how to make rice alcohol and at the Pak Ou Caves, you can see thousands of golden Buddha statues nestled within enormous limestone cliffs.

Day 9-12

Luang Prabang

Once you reach the fascinating UNESCO World Heritage Site of Luang Prabang, you will meet your guide who will teach you about Laos’ lively culture, visiting the former Royal Palace, the golden Wat Mai, and the stunning Kuang Si Waterfalls, where you can have a picnic and swim in the refreshing turquoise pools. Children will love the Free the Bears sanctuary, which looks after bears that have been rescued from poachers, as well as the Kuang Si Butterfly Park, where thousands of species of butterflies’ flutter around the splendid gardens.

Day 12-15

Champasak, Southern Laos, Laos

The last stop on this itinerary is Champasak, where you can visit the spectacular 4000 Islands, also known as Siphandon. This is a 14-kilometer wide section of the Mekong River, which contains thousands of tiny moss-covered, limestone islands. Spot the rare Irrawaddy Dolphin, visit the cascading Lippi falls, and try out local cuisine at friendly restaurants.
