Arctic Retreat is a small, family-run property located in the tiny village of Gunnarsbyn in Swedish Lapland. The retreat is made up of a collection of traditional log cabins and offers an exclusive and inviting base from which to enjoy the wilderness.
Hidden away deep in the forest, the Arctic Retreat is located in one of the most stunning spots in Swedish Lapland. The Råne River winds its way around this tiny peninsula, with the Raven Rapids thundering just a few hundred metres away from the cabins. Other than the lapping of the water, here you can enjoy almost complete silence and serenity.
Made up of handful of traditional log cabins, Arctic Retreat offers a truly exclusive and personalised escape. Each of the three cabins boast cosy log burners, floor-to-ceiling windows and private hot tubs, from where you can relax and soak up the incredible views of the Lappish wilderness. The cabins can be booked individually or all together on an exclusive-use basis for larger groups. Dinner is served in one of the camp's traditional log cabins and is a sumptuous affair where Liza, the owner, shows off her incredible flair for cooking, regularly using locally-sourced ingredients and delighting her guests with her Scandinavian fare.
Although it would be easy to stay by the fire and simply marvel at the view all day, it would be a shame not to experience everything this breath-taking area has to offer. In winter this includes husky sledding, snowshoe walks, hiking, snowmobiling, ice fishing and Nordic skiing. If you are lucky enough to make a catch during a fishing experience, the chef will even prepare your fish for your next meal! Back at camp, you can huddle up by the fire, sharing stories of your day with other guests over a cup of coffee, or warm up in the traditional Swedish sauna. It is also possible to stay at the Arctic Retreat during the spring, autumn or summer, where the woodland location next to the river makes it the perfect base to enjoy an array of activities on the land or water including canoeing, hiking and culinary experiences.
The Retreat offers a truly authentic Swedish experience, working closely with local people and locally-sourced materials and supplies. With a homely, personalised service Arctic Retreat offers a great location to escape in this stunning corner of Scandinavia.
The traditional timber cabins all feature floor-to-ceiling north-facing windows, perfect for keeping an eye-out for the elusive Northern Lights. The open-plan living areas have a cosy living area with a fireplace and outside you have a private outdoor jacuzzi.
Cabin 2 is one of the larger cabins and features a loft bedroom with a double bed. There is also a separate bedroom downstairs with bunk beds, making family stays possible here.
At Arctic Retreat you'll enjoy personal service in a homely atmosphere. Each cabin benefits from their own private outdoor jacuzzi and there is also a sauna for guests to use. Yoga lessons and massages can also be arranged on site.
There are a range of activities available from Arctic Retreat depending on what time of year you travel. During winter we can arrange cross-country skiing, snowshoe walks, snow mobiling, husky sledding and Northern Lights experiences, to name a few.
In summer many experiences take place on the river with kayaking and rafting available, as well as hiking and cultural experiences on land.

Even arriving in the dark was a magical experience, the cabins were beautifully lit up with a central fire and you instantly felt at home. There are three wonderful lakeside log cabins which are remotely located in Swedish Lapland and a fantastic location for lots of amazing winter activities. The cabins are all duplexes suitable for couples, friends and families alike and each has their own private jacuzzi - from which you can spot the Northern Lights if you're lucky! Niklas and Lisa are amazing hosts and will look after you every step of the way; from cooking the most exquisite meals to organising fun winter activities. A real highlight for me was the aurora snowshoe walk with our very knowledgeable local guide who told me so many things about Lapland that I never knew before.

We absolutely loved our stay at Arctic Retreat. From the minute we arrived we could tell it was a special place. Firstly, the location is simply stunning. Surrounded by a babling river and endless forest, this feels like a retreat in every sense of the word. Our cabin was cosy yet modern with its floor to ceiling windows it truly brings the outside in. As the sun set on Swedish Lapland, we strapped into our snowshoes and headed out to explore the wilderness. crisscrossing through the forest, we discovered hare, reindeer and moose tracks, stopped for warm Lyngen berry juice and drank up the silence of this stunning spot. Diner was a delicious three course treat served in a cosy log cabin, as we chatted the night away with our Swedish hosts and Singaporian neighbours, i felt so lucky to be invited to stay in this lovely little property.

Arctic Retreat is a cozy haven tucked deep into the forest of Swedish Lapland on the bend of the Rane River We stayed in the large cabin which offers a king bed in the loft and bunk beds downstairs. There is a large living room with views of the river and a deck with a jacuzzi to enjoy the northern lights or the stars in the evenings. The meals are thoughtfully prepared and served in a cozy cabin on the complex, which we enjoyed alongside our hosts and our neighboring guests from Singapore. Staying at Arctic Retreat felt like staying with friends in their special home from home. The property also has a sauna that can be booked for private use and the owners have connections with the best local guides to ensure that your days are filled with memorable experiences. We enjoying a snowshoe walk through the woods in the dark and it felt a bit surreal! I recommend this hotel for couples or families.
