From May to August the Yala monsoon brings rain to the island’s southwestern half. The southwest has the highest rainfall – up to 4000mm a year. There is also an inter-monsoonal period in October and November when rain can occur in many parts of the island. Colombo and the low-lying coastal regions have an average temperature of 27°C. The sea stays at around 27°C all year. Climatically speaking, the driest (and best) seasons in Sri Lanka are from December to March for the west and south coasts.
The Maldives has a tropical climate distinguished by two seasons, or monsoons: the dry northeast monsoon from December to March, and the wet southwestern monsoon from May to November, with more strong winds and rain. April is a transitional period noted for clear water and heat. The temperature remains remarkably consistent at around 30°C.

Days 1-4: Hatton
From Colombo Airport you’ll take a direct flight with Cinnamon Air to Castlereagh of just over half hour, which is your gateway to the Hill Country. In comparison, the drive time is just over six hours and by taking the flight you’ll be treated to a bird’s eye view of the spectacular scenery of Sri Lanka below. Arriving in the Hill Country, where you’ll be spending the next three nights, you’ll feel as though you have stepped back in time staying in an exquisite tea bungalow. Take your time to explore this beautiful part of Sri Lanka with walks in the surrounding plantations and in classic colonial style enjoy some lawn tennis, croquet and take a tour of the still working tea factories.
Accommodation: Ceylon Tea Trails (3 nights)
-
Days 4-5: Sri Lanka's West Coast
Starting off you’ll have one night just outside of Colombo to recoup after your international flight and to make sure that you are able to connect to your following flight into the Hill Country.
Accommodation: The Wallawwa (1 night)
-
Days 5-10: Weligama
For your next stop, you’ll transfer back to Castlereagh where you’ll meet your following flight down to the south coast of Sri Lanka to Koggala, again just a short 35-minute scenic flight, cutting off over 4 hours from your transfer time. Spend the following five nights on the palm fringed beaches of Weligama, just to minutes from the historic town of Galle. Galle is beautiful to explore on foot full of ancient mosques, churches, mansions and plenty of boutique shops and delicious restaurants to try. Weligama is a brilliant location for newbie surfers to test out their skills and the white sandy beach is perfect for long walks to either explore the surrounding fishing villages or just simply relax and unwind.
