From May to August the Yala monsoon brings rain to the island’s southwestern half. The southwest has the highest rainfall – up to 4000mm a year. There is also an inter-monsoonal period in October and November when rain can occur in many parts of the island. Colombo and the low-lying coastal regions have an average temperature of 27°C. The sea stays at around 27°C all year. Climatically speaking, the driest (and best) seasons in Sri Lanka are from December to March for the west and south coasts.

Insider's View

As well as doing game drives, we recommend doing the bush walk from Chena Huts which allows you to encounter flora & fauna you wouldn't normally from a jeep

Make sure to take a pair of binoculars with you to help you spot an array of different species of wildlife on a game drive in Yala National park.

Request a room with a pathway down to the beach. You can't swim there but it makes a nice morning or evening walk!

Surrounded by unspoilt wilderness, Chena Huts is nestled amongst dunes and trees at the ocean's edge, lying within a few minutes from the entrance to Yala National Park. It is an ideal place to observe the magnificent profusion of wildlife and nature.

As the newest addition to the Uga portfolio, and the most exciting new luxury accommodation option for Yala, Chena Huts is ideally located for exploring Sri Lanka's most famous national park. With just 14 individual cabins spread out over seven acres of land, guests can enjoy a safari experience without compromising on comfort or exclusivity.

Yala National Park is located in the south eastern corner of Sri Lanka, and has a very diverse landscape which attracts a wide range of wildlife, including 44 different species of mammal such as water buffalo, elephants, sloth bears and, of course, the elusive leopard. There are also plenty of species of reptile such as turtles, crocodiles and lizards, and it is fantastic for bird watching. Every stay at Chena Huts includes safaris within the park.

The spacious cabins have been tastefully designed to fit in beautifully with the safari feel of the property and location, with natural materials and neutral colours. The cabins at Chena Huts measure 71 square metres in size and are carefully climate-controlled, with a sitting room, bedroom, en suite bathroom and large outdoor deck which has its own 5-metre plunge pool.

Dining at Chena Huts isn't limited to the property's beautifully designed Basses Restaurant. With the emphasis being very much on bespoke and private experiences, guests can dine in their pavilions, or have a private table set up under the stars for a truly unforgettable evening.

I was seriously impressed by Chena Huts - what a place! Located on the south west corner of Yala it's hard to beat in terms of location. It's on the coast, in the jungle and boast the accolade of being the closest hotel to the park. As it's so close it does mean that you get many visitors which just adds to its charm. We had an elephant drinking out of the receptions pond, wild boar coming to graze in front of us during supper and monkeys playing the trees above the pool. The resort itself is run like a luxury safari camp with 14 amazing villas located around the jungle, each reached by raised pathways. On the midst of the villas there's a lovely pool area, a small spa and a lovely bar / restaurant area with views down to the beach and a famous lighthouse 13km off shore. The rooms are some of the nicest I've ever seen - they are huge! Each room has king bed, standalone tub, comfy seating area and a garden with a private pool. One of the other huge selling points is the staff, they were fantastic from start to finish and we couldn't have been looked after any better. Chena Huts is not cheap, but if you make the most of the resort on the all-inclusive basis I think its well worth the money!

Chena Huts is the most luxurious option within the area and offers instant access to the park, which is known for having the largest concentration of leopards in the world. Each of the 14 pavilions are beautifully designed and furnished to emphasise the safari theme and come with their very own terrace and plunge pool to relax in in between game-drives. Combining luxury with adventure Chena Huts offers an all-rounded stay where the experience of game drives is parallel to the luxury of accommodation, the food is great and the staff are very personable.

Probably one the coolest hotels I have ever stayed in, Chena Huts are a unique collection of spacious thatched chalets set right on a wild stretch of beach right near the entrance to Yala National Park. It's the perfect balance between wildlife and relaxation.
