KwaZulu Natal boasts a sub-tropical climate and tends to enjoy sunshine year-round with hot and humid summers, from November to March and much milder winters (May to September) than the rest of the country. The coastal line is typically blessed with around 300 days of sunshine while the elevation of the Drakensberg makes the temperatures more moderate. During the rainy season, the Drakensberg is likely to have daily thunderstorms and rain.

Feel on top of the world as you road-trip through the Drakensburg Mountains, passing jaw-dropping scenery. Take to the trails on mountain bikes, go wild swimming in beautiful dams and waterfalls and hike through vast vistas, learning about the Anglo-Zulu battle in the heart of the Drakensburg. Track white rhino on foot with a renowned guide and explore the massive sand dunes and wetlands of St Lucia. This trip is ideal for second timers to Africa, wanting something truly unique.

  1. Fly to Durban

  2. Days 1-2: Durban

    Catch your overnight flight to Durban where you will be met by one of our representatives who will fast track you through the airport to collect your SUV. Make your way to Lalaria Lodge, located on what is known as the Dolphin Coast of South Africa. Unwind and enjoy the tranquillity of the sparkling pool, which is surrounded by tropical gardens teeming with birdlife. The serenity of the gardens will occasionally break as a boisterous vervet monkey stops by! Spend your evening relishing on an al-fresco meal on the deck overlooking the ocean where you may spot dolphins zipping between the waves.

  3. Days 2-4: The Drakensberg

    This morning your road trip begins as you make your way across the majestic Drakensberg Mountains to Montusi Mountain Lodge, which has astonishing views of the Amphitheatre, which takes pride of place in the northern Drakensberg. Discover the space and nature of this region through a plethora of activities; mountain bike through vast vistas, go wild swimming in beautiful dams and canter into the river valleys on horseback. This region is brimming with endemic bird species, so bring your binoculars and admire the vibrant colours of kingfishers and sugarbirds against the lush green backdrop of the mountain range. Spend your evenings relishing on delicious local cuisine overlooking the Amphitheatre or on cooler evenings, cosy up by the log fireplace with a glass of South African sauvignon blanc.

  4. Days 4-6: Rorke's Drift

    Today you journey to the cultural melting pot of Fugitive’s Drift, known for the Anglo-Zulu war in the battlefields. You’ll spend the next 3 days delving into the history of this fascinating region as you listen to the enthralling stories of the battle between the British Empire and Zulu Warriors recounted by expert guides, whilst exploring the breathtakingly beautiful scenery. You can also try your hand at fly-fishing and take to the nature trails on bike. Spend your evenings enjoying superb cuisine on the deck and drinking wine around the crackling fire.

  5. Days 6-9: KwaZulu Natal and the north coast

    It’s time for your fix of wildlife as you drive to Hluhwue-Imfolozi National Park for an unforgettable Big Five safari. As you drive through the park, you will be encased with rolling hills, sweeping valleys and lush, vivid green vegetation. Your base for the next 3 nights is Rhino Ridge Safari Lodge and after enjoying a delicious home-cooked lunch on the deck, with panoramic views over the park, you will head out on your first game drive. Let your excitement wander as you journey into the park in your open safari vehicle and approach your first wildlife sightings. As well as the Big Five, you may also be lucky enough to spot a pack of African wild dog; follow a pack of these fast-paced canines and watch in awe as they work together, racing through the park to hunt down prey.  In the evening, enjoy a gin and tonic and some nibbles out in the bush, as towering giraffes and the rolling hills are silhouetted against the burnt orange sky.  

    During your time in this park, you will spend your time tracking wildlife with expert guides. You will also have the chance to experience the ultimate nature walk; journey out on foot with the lodge ranger and feel your senses awaken as you delve into the wilderness, walking past a myriad of little critters and plants and encountering white rhino along the way.

    Accommodation: Rhino Ridge Safari Lodge (3 nights)

  6. Days 9-12: KwaZulu Natal and the north coast

    Venture into the park one more time and soak up your surroundings before heading to Kwazulu Natal’s radiant coastline. Just an hour and 30 minutes away, you will arrive at Serene Estate Guesthouse in St Lucia, adjacent to the World Heritage Site of Isimangaliso Wetland Park. The next 3 days here can be as energetic or chilled out as you wish. Explore the wetland park, teeming with hippos and enjoy astonishing views of the ocean and the towering sand dunes. From June-November, journey out to sea to view Humpback whales migrating through and marvel at the sheer size of these gentle giants. Glide over Lake St Lucia in a kayak, taking in the beauty of nature in peace. Or laze by the pool, surrounded by pristine gardens with a cocktail in hand. The choice is yours.

  7. Fly Home

    Today you will drive to Durban to drop off your car hire and board your flight back to the UK via Johannesburg.

    Hluhluwe is the oldest game reserve in Africa and is a pioneering region for conservation. With 96,000 hectares of wilderness, it is famous for its populations of white rhino as well as big cats, elephant, buffalo, zebra, giraffe and many more!

  • Rorke's Drift Tour

    Listen at sunset as this tour follows the famous story of Rorke's Drift. Following on from the Isandlwana morning tour, you'll learn of how the remaining British fell back to the mission station to protect the church and hospital.
