Situated on the ocean’s edge, the Oyster Box Hotel has 86 rooms and is conveniently located for quick and easy access to Durban city centre, International Airports and numerous stylish shopping centres, yet has maintained a feeling of classical elegance.
The Oyster Box at Umhlanga Rocks in Durban first opened its doors way back in 1947. The combination of colonial charm, impeccable service, lush tropical gardens and breath-taking coastal setting quickly earned it a fantastic reputation.
In October 2009, this iconic landmark was lovingly refurbished and reopened, to offer guests a contemporary experience, whilst still evoking the nostalgia of days gone by. The former glory of the hotel has been sympathetically enhanced, and the warm hospitality and elegance which encouraged guests to return time and again have been retained and blended with contemporary touches and state-of-the-art facilities. Throughout the hotel, the setting, architecture, décor and the cuisine have all been revised and enhanced.
On arrival enjoy a complimentary glass of the Oyster Box’s signature homemade lemonade, or a glass of sparkling wine. Indulge yourself in a relaxing treatment at the beautifully designed Oyster Box spa. Children and pets are made immediately to feel at home, and meals are a gastronomist’s delight, the chef having prepared everything personally and able to create original and delicious combinations. Or choose to play a few rounds of golf! The days are yours to enjoy before settling down on the terrace with a long cool cocktail before dinner.
We highly recommend the Oyster Box hotel for those wishing to stay in a contemporary, stylish hotel with excellent cuisine and luxurious home comforts.
The Oyster Box has 86 different types of luxurious rooms, suites and also a private villa. They are beautifully decorated in a beach chic style reflecting the surrounding area. There is definitely a feeling of tranquility within the rooms. The rooms and suites have either wonderful views of the lush garden or of the breathtaking coastline.
The hotel is very welcoming to children. Children under 12 years stay free, children between the ages of 4 and 12 have access to supervised holiday club and playroom. There are child friendly turn downs in the evenings and child friendly menus in the restaurant. Children also have exclusive access to the 24-seater cinema to keep them entertained. Babysitting is available upon request if parents fancy a bit of time to themselves.
Katie Fewkes (Staff)
The Oyster Box is a beautiful grande dame of a hotel and staying here feels a little like stepping back in time in a charming way. The original features including the hand-painted friezes on the walls, and chequer-board floor effortlessly combine with the exceptional service levels the hotel offers - and this is a real highlight of the stay. The staff go out of their way to look after you, whether you're merely checking in to the hotel, dining or you arrive back to the carpark in the rain - there's someone waiting outside your car with an umbrella open so you don't get wet. This old-fashioned service utterly charmed me and I can easily see why the hotel is so revered. The rooms are comfortable and well kitted out, although a little dated in some areas, and some rooms are not as large as more modern hotels. However, the charm of the overall hotel and its wonderful staff more than outweigh this and it's easily still one of the top hotels in Durban.
