Reviews
Amber Hopkins (Staff)
Perched on the hillside in popular Bantry Bay overlooking the ocean, Ellerman House is certainly a unique and special property. As soon as you arrive you're greeted by friendly and helpful staff who make you feel as though you're returning to your home, emphasised by there being no check-in desk and a key tray in the main hall where guests happily leave their room keys during the day. Lovers of Fine Art will be fascinated by the abundance of South African art displayed on the walls at Ellerman House, ranging from classical pieces through to contemporary in their private gallery in the gardens. Complimentary South African whisky, gin and brandy in guests' rooms make for a really lovely touch, and would highly recommend enjoying from your balcony overlooking their manicured garden and sea. If wine is more your cup of tea, their extensive wine gallery where tastings can be organised comes highly recommended, and for foodies they have a pantry offering an array complimentary sweet and savoury treats to guests through out the day which makes you feel like a child in a sweet shop! A very enjoyable and memorable stay.

Ellerman House is one of the most luxurious hotel options in Cape Town and has the most amazing ocean views out to Robben Island. I absolutely loved the private art collection which is one of the finest collections in South Africa and includes the last official portrait taken of Nelson Mandela of which there are only two original copies.
The larder was also a lovely little touch where guests can help themselves to snacks and drinks should they feel at all peckish throughout the day.
Ellerman House has a real home away from home feel, in winter there are roaring fires in every room and comfortable sofas to curl up on. In summer, all the veranda doors are wide open and you can spend the day relaxing by the pool overlooking Camps Bay.

Quite possibly the most stunning vista in the whole of Camps Bay, Ellerman House oozes Edwardian style from the moment you arrive. Descend the wood-panelled staircase into a beautiful drawing room with original artworks on the walls, and a fully restored grand piano (on which the menus for the day are displayed in highly polished silver frames). A library can be found next door, but it is the outside space which really sets Ellerman apart. Cascading lawns, fringed with flowerbeds specifically planted with Cape flowers, draw the eye to the incredible view of the ocean. Palm trees dot the lawn, sculptures peer from between thickly flowered bushes, and behind all this the house towers, cream coloured and elegant. Ellerman also has an art gallery collected over many years and showcasing some of the very best of South African art well worth taking a wander through. The rooms are, as you would expect, sumptuously furnished and beautifully appointed. Ellerman is splendidly charming, a house full of character, just perfect for those wishing for a bit of English country house style in the glorious Riviera setting of Bantry Bay.

A fantastic location down on Bantry Bay gives Elerman house a really special feel. As we sat having lunch on the terrace taking in the large lawn and glittering waters of the swimming pool beyond you could see why it has one of the highest rates for returning guests in cape town. The rooms are very true to the colonial and traditional feel of the hotel. However the spa located across the lawn in a separate building also housing the awesome private villa is very much more modern with light wood and huge windows bathing it in light. The hotel is also involved heavenly in contemporary art and has an impressive gallery on site that is open for guests to tour with a resident expert.
A grown up hotel that offers the chance to feel completely relaxed in your own private garden paradise with a large pool surrounded by loungers you could happily spend a week relaxing then heading into Cape Town for a dinner or drink in the evenings. The perfect combination!

This is quite possibly the most luxurious and spoiling place to stay in Cape Town. Beautiful terraced lawns and an incredible swimming pool. Fantastic attentive service, delicious food and great views over Bantry Bay and out to Robben Island.

Best for ambience & design - With glorious views over Bantry Bay, this beautiful boutique hotel is the former home of shipping magnate Sir John Ellerman. Famed for its extensive South African art collection and 9,000-bottle wine cellar, it has just nine elegant rooms and two suites. There is a heated pool in the terraced grounds, a spa and a contemporary-art gallery that doubles as a private cinema. The separate, three-bedroom Ellerman Villa has a private chef and butler service; a second villa, which will house a state-of-the-art wine cellar and wine library, is currently being constructed. The concierge team will arrange anything, including tables at the city's best restaurants. All rooms are equipped with iPads for guests' use.
X-factor 'This is one of my favourite places in the world,' says Gold List contributor Peter Browne. 'It is exceptionally beautiful and undeniably sumptuous, with valuable paintings by the most respected South African artists, but it somehow never feels remotely intimidating or grand.'
Louisa Verney (Staff)
This is quite possibly, THE place to stay in Cape Town. With stunning views overlooking Bantry Bay, if you can stay here... do! The service is so discreet but perfectly done that no guest need goes unmissed. With its elegant sunbeds surrounding the large pool this is exactly where I'd want to be on a sunny afternoon in Cape Town, as I sip on a cold gin and tonic. The food looked amazing and as a Relais and Chateau, you would expect it to be! Every room is decorated individually with such care in a classic but contemporary way. If you are lucky enough to go, you must spend some time in the new art gallery. It changes regularly and supports local artists.
