Average time to visit

April to October is best for time for visiting Peru’s Andean region and main highlights. It is typically sunny in the day and cold at night due to the altitude. Heavy rains last from December to end of February with January and February being the wettest months. The Amazon is generally hot, wet and humid year round. Peru is very popular in the high season, especially during their many cultural festivals such as Inti Raymi on 24 June, so best to plan well in advance.

Itinerary

Fly to Cuzco (via Lima)
Day 1-4

Sacred Valley

Begin by flying to Cuzco and transferring into the Sacred Valley to relax at the Belmond Hotel Rio Sagrado, amongst beautiful rural scenery and traditional Andean villages. This is a great spot to acclimatise to the altitude and take in some gentle exploration of the local markets, Inca sites and stunning Andean landscapes. Continue by the luxurious Inca Rail train to Machu Picchu to witness this magical ancient citadel with a private guide, continuing to Cuzco.

Accommodation: Rio Sagrado, A Belmond Hotel ( 3 nights )
Day 4-6

Cusco

Check in at Palacio Nazarenas for two nights, Cuzco’s swishest hotel and a meticulously restored former convent. Enjoy the cultural heritage of this famous city with its spectacular Inca ruins, grand colonial architecture and great museums, all of which are within easy reach.

Accommodation: Palacio Nazarenas, A Belmond Hotel ( 2 nights )
Day 6-9

Andean Explorer train to Puno

For many, the train to Puno is a real highlight, as you cross the vast altiplano, but things get even better when you arrive at Titilaka, a luxury lodge with gorgeous views over the lake and towards the Cordillera Real. During your three nights here, be sure to visit the floating reed islands of the Uros Indians and make the most of the included excursions which include hikes around the lake and kayaking on its mirror-like waters.

Accommodation: Titilaka ( 3 nights )
Day 9-10

Lima

Lima, the gastronomic capital of South America, beckons for a night, as you stay at the Belmond Miraflores Park Hotel, ideally located overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Enjoy some superlative seafood on a foodie tour of the city and take in a traditional pena in the trendy Barranco district.

Accommodation: Miraflores Park, A Belmond Hotel ( 1 night )
Day 10-14

Iquitos

Finally, jet over to the Amazon basin to board the Aqua Nera, a superbly luxurious small expedition vessel that plies the remoter reaches of the Amazon. Fantastic wildlife viewing and encounters with indigenous tribes as well as memorable sunsets provide a fitting climax to this journey of a lifetime.

Accommodation: Aqua Nera ( 4 nights )
