Best time to Visit

Good time to visit

Average time to visit

The climate in New Zealand is incredibly pleasant, with warm and balmy summers and cold crisp winter months with wonderful clear, blue skies. The warmer high-season months of November to April are perfect for outdoor exploration. The colder months of June to August are the best time to ski.

Both North and South Islands are drier on the east coast, rather than on the west, where mountain ranges act as a trap for the moisture-rich winds from the Tasman Sea. It is also worth remembering that it is usually a few degrees cooler on the South Island than the North Island and as New Zealand has a maritime climate, the weather can change rapidly.

Designed like an old style dude ranch, the American owners of Blanket Bay have created a spacious and sprawling home alongside the edge of lake Wakatipu with views to the soaring peaks beyond. The lodge is nestled in truly stunning scenery and the decor throughout is deep wooden beams and huge cathedral windows looking to the views, antiques, deep leather chairs and sofas for relaxing and warm rugs on polished tiled floors. This is a lodge for a family who can enjoy staying in the main hotel or outside lodges, the owners two bedroom house and further bedrooms in the studio. The owners' passion for horses and fishing is apparent throughout so take time to ride through the magnificent scenery, take a boat out for the day and catch a rainbow or brown trout or just sit in the Jacuzzi spa and take in the view. There are 'toys' galore here and games rooms for the kids or teenagers. The Dart River boats will pick you up for a day of excitement from their dock, the Minaret Boys will pick you up and whisk you to the clouds and a plethora or other fabulous activities are all possible from this great location. Views, space, activities and only 40 minutes drive from Queenstown are all a reason to spend a few days chilling out in Blanket Bay.

Driving along the shore of Lake Wakatipu is a joy in itself but nothing prepared me for the commanding and truly awesome presence of Blanket Bay. Built from dark, schist stone and weathered timber, this exclusive and imposing property really does take your breath away! The property houses amazing Lodge Rooms, with their own balcony or terrace and a real lodge feel, country décor and comfy beds.

The three Lodge Suites offer bedroom and sitting areas, which have their own stone fireplace, spacious bathroom with steam shower and separate tub. Outside each suite has a 400 sq ft private terrace, with wonderful views of the lake and mountains.Blanket Bay also has chalets built in the grounds, which complement the main Lodge perfectly through the use of schist stone and timber beams. Each chalet has two suites with open stone fireplaces and a central living room.

All rooms have sumptuous furnishings and elegant rugs and use natural materials and cosy country colours, really blending the outside with the interior. The communal areas of the lodge are equally impressive, I loved the Games Room, complete with its own pool table, table shuffle board, backgammon, chess, cards and extensive DVD library!
