The climate in New Zealand is incredibly pleasant, with warm and balmy summers and cold crisp winter months with wonderful clear, blue skies. The warmer high-season months of November to April are perfect for outdoor exploration. The colder months of June to August are the best time to ski.
Both North and South Islands are drier on the east coast, rather than on the west, where mountain ranges act as a trap for the moisture-rich winds from the Tasman Sea. It is also worth remembering that it is usually a few degrees cooler on the South Island than the North Island and as New Zealand has a maritime climate, the weather can change rapidly.

An elegant, luxury lodge, with a natural, rustic edge, Blanket Bay is framed by the crystal clear Lake Wakatipu and New Zealand's majestic Southern Alps. Here you can indulge in a plethora of outdoor activities knowing that the relaxing lodge awaits.
In this haven of peace and tranquillity on the pristine shores of Lake Wakatipu lies the luxury lodge Blanket Bay. The views are out of this world - around you, snow-capped mountains hold court over wild rivers and hillsides of golden grasslands, and ancient forests huddle up to crystal clear lakes.
The lodge's main building is designed to be warm and welcoming and there are plenty of cosy corners in which to relax, a games room and a den with a fully stocked self service bar. Here you can enjoy pre-dinner cocktails and refined cuisine in a choice of dining venues both indoors, outdoors and even underground in the wine cave. The lodge's chefs use the best regional produce New Zealand has to offer and produce contemporary food full of flavor and style that has won Blanket Bay many awards and accolades.
All rooms and suites at Blanket Bay are filled with sumptuous furnishings and elegant rugs and creature comforts are never lacking. Natural materials are used throughout, echoing the Lodge’s natural interaction with the environment and every room is carefully designed to take full advantage of the magnificent lake and mountain vistas from every aspect whether it be the bedroom, bathroom or outside on the terrace or deck.
From Blanket Bay the choice of activities and day trips is voluminous - from heli-skiing and heli-fishing to horse riding, rafting and mountain biking there is something to suit all levels of experience and adventure. Back at the lodge a comforting Jacuzzi, sauna or dip in the lap pool await and in-room massage could be just what you need to revive you before cocktail hour begins.
Blanket Bay has five intimate Lodge Rooms, three generous Lodge Suites and four stand-alone Chalet Suites. Resplendent in polished woods and fine fabrics, the Lodge Rooms each have their own balcony or terrace, king-size bed and seating area. The Lodge Suites have the addition of a huge 400 sq ft private balcony, large seating area and fireplace. Chalet Suites are away from the main lodge building with private courtyard gardens and when connected with a living room form a 'Chalet Stateroom'. All suites feature: Wi-Fi, TV and DVD player, and include sports equipment, breakfast, pre-dinner cocktails, dinner and use of self-service bar.
Children under the age of 13 years cannot be accommodated at Blanket Bay and for older children who are welcomed, babysitting can be arranged but other than this there are no specific facilities. Teenage children will love all of the adventurous activities this region has to offer from mountain biking to rafting, bungee jumping and thrilling jet boats.
Breakfast and lunch are served in the Breakfast Dining Room and delectable Pacific Rim cuisine is served for dinner at individual tables in the Evening Dining Room, outdoor terrace or wine cave. Pre-dinner cocktails are served in The Den and The Great Room is a wonderful place filled with antiques to relax and unwind by the fire. There is also a Games Room, self service bar, gym, steam room, Jacuzzi and heated outdoor lap pool open in the summer months.
Around Blanket Bay a vast choice of activities is available from hiking, fishing, skiing, heli skiing, horse riding, jet-boating, sky-diving, wine tasting and visiting Milford Sound. Within the hotel the swimming pool, sauna, gym and Jacuzzi can all be enjoyed.
There is over 8,500 sq/km of terrain around Queenstown and Wanaka to play in, and a range of options and packages for heli-skiing in and heli-boarding to match your abilities. We work with experienced guides who will pick you up from the lawn of Blanket Bay and whisk you to a peak topped with fresh snow. With a ratio of five clients to one guide, grouped together with people of similar ability you'll have a day you'll never forget.

Designed like an old style dude ranch, the American owners of Blanket Bay have created a spacious and sprawling home alongside the edge of lake Wakatipu with views to the soaring peaks beyond. The lodge is nestled in truly stunning scenery and the decor throughout is deep wooden beams and huge cathedral windows looking to the views, antiques, deep leather chairs and sofas for relaxing and warm rugs on polished tiled floors. This is a lodge for a family who can enjoy staying in the main hotel or outside lodges, the owners two bedroom house and further bedrooms in the studio. The owners' passion for horses and fishing is apparent throughout so take time to ride through the magnificent scenery, take a boat out for the day and catch a rainbow or brown trout or just sit in the Jacuzzi spa and take in the view. There are 'toys' galore here and games rooms for the kids or teenagers. The Dart River boats will pick you up for a day of excitement from their dock, the Minaret Boys will pick you up and whisk you to the clouds and a plethora or other fabulous activities are all possible from this great location. Views, space, activities and only 40 minutes drive from Queenstown are all a reason to spend a few days chilling out in Blanket Bay.

Driving along the shore of Lake Wakatipu is a joy in itself but nothing prepared me for the commanding and truly awesome presence of Blanket Bay. Built from dark, schist stone and weathered timber, this exclusive and imposing property really does take your breath away! The property houses amazing Lodge Rooms, with their own balcony or terrace and a real lodge feel, country décor and comfy beds.
The three Lodge Suites offer bedroom and sitting areas, which have their own stone fireplace, spacious bathroom with steam shower and separate tub. Outside each suite has a 400 sq ft private terrace, with wonderful views of the lake and mountains.Blanket Bay also has chalets built in the grounds, which complement the main Lodge perfectly through the use of schist stone and timber beams. Each chalet has two suites with open stone fireplaces and a central living room.
All rooms have sumptuous furnishings and elegant rugs and use natural materials and cosy country colors, really blending the outside with the interior. The communal areas of the lodge are equally impressive, I loved the Games Room, complete with its own pool table, table shuffle board, backgammon, chess, cards and extensive DVD library!
