How to See Mount Fuji

For general timings, we advise guests to plan to visit early. Mornings tend to offer the clearest skies, and the mountain has a habit of disappearing behind cloud as the day progresses. Aim to be at your chosen viewpoint at dawn, when the light is better and the crowds are thinner.

However, in terms of the different ways to see Mount Fuji, our favourites are the Fujisan Panoramic ropeway and from the lakes.

The Fujisan Panoramic Ropeway

The Fujisan Panoramic Ropeway, also known as the Kachi Kachi Ropeway, ascends from the northern shore of Lake Kawaguchi to the summit of Mount Tenjo, delivering one of the most arresting views of Fuji you'll find anywhere. The cable car ride takes just a few minutes and provides one of the best panoramic views in Japan. It's accessible, unhurried, and genuinely spectacular, making it an excellent option for families with younger children, older travellers, or anyone who wants big views without a long walk. A short trail at the summit leads to further viewpoints.

From the Fuji Five Lakes

The Fuji Five Lakes — Kawaguchi, Yamanakako, Saiko, Shojiko, and Motosuko — wrap around the northern base of the mountain, each offering a different perspective and a different atmosphere. Kawaguchi is the most visited, with the reflections here on a still morning extraordinary, and the surrounding town has excellent restaurants and cafés to settle into. Yamanakako is the largest of the lakes and tends to be quieter, popular with cyclists and walkers. For those who want to get out on the water, boat hire is available on several of the lakes. The Five Lakes area suits every type of traveller, from families wanting space to roam, to couples looking for a more tranquil retreat away from the busier tourist spots.
