Begin with a drive towards central Bali and to the small town of Mengwi. Mengwi is famous for the temple complex at Taman Ayun (meaning beautiful garden). Marvel at this religious place that some say is the most attractive of all Bali's temples.
Next, a drive further north will take you past the three caldera lakes of Beratan, Buyan and Tamblingan before arriving at Candi Kuning market, famous for fresh fruit, exotic spices and fragrant and colourful flowers.
Finally, you will arrive at the magnificent Ulun Danu Temple (Hindu Shivaite water temple), located on Lake Beratan in such a way that the 17th century temple gives the illusion that it is floating on the water. Break for lunch and then return south, passing the glistening rice terraces at Jatiluwih en route.
