Average time to visit
In general, the best time to go to Cambodia is from November through to April, as this is when there is the least rain, although it can start to get very hot from March onwards. The wet season is from May to October. The beginning of the wet season in May and June, and the end in October tend to just see short, heavy showers, whereas rain is more frequent from July to September, particularly in the south of the country.

Days 1-4: Siem Reap & Angkor Wat
Your epic Cambodian adventure will begin in Siem Reap, where you’ll be met at the airport by your private guide and transferred to the gorgeous sanctuary of your Belmond hotel nearby. As you stroll around the hotel’s tropical gardens, cool off in the 35-metre long swimming pool or work your way through the extensive cocktail list, you’ll feel a million miles away from the hustle and bustle of the town’s tourist trappings, which surprisingly are only a ten minute walk away! Rooms are large and bright, everything feels luxurious but not opulent, think polished hardwood, bamboo and silk textiles. With a fantastic spa and a quirky “street-food style” offering at the main restaurant, there’s no need to leave the property in the evening, unless you want to practice your battering technique at the lively night market.
Of course, the main draw to the area is the vast and truly impressive archaeological site, dotted around the surrounding jungle you’ll find a multitude of overgrown temple complexes, most famously Angkor Wat. We recommend a morning visit, arriving before daybreak to witness the imposing façade of Angkor Wat light up in the morning sun, whilst the sky turns a marvellous mix of burnt orange and vibrant purple. Accompanied by a passionate expert guide, you’ll also be whisked around some of the lesser known temples, avoiding the tourist crowds, whilst providing you with a detailed understanding of the country’s colourful history and religious mythology.
Many tourists visit Siem Reap without seeing little more than temples but beyond Angkor lies a bucolic rural landscape that has changed very little over the centuries. We’ve included a special experience that gets you out into authentic villages where you will meet local families and be welcomed by monks as you learn more about the rural Cambodia of today. Travel through lush rice paddies in an ox drawn cart, see children washing their water buffalo in the river, take a bot ride across Western Baray (a huge reservoir) and enjoy a delicious posh picnic beside the water.
For a completely unforgettable experience, why not take a helicopter flight over the temples and surrounding countryside. This bird’s-eye view perspective will allow you to fully appreciate the majesty and sheer size of Angkor Wat and the vast waters of Tonle Sap LakeAccommodation: Belmond La Résidence d’Angkor (3 nights)

Days 4-6: Phnom Penh
From Siem Reap it is only a short flight to Cambodia’s capital city, Phnom Penh, where you’ll be staying at the grand and historic Raffles Le Royal Hotel, a luxurious landmark property that beautifully encapsulates the influence of the Khmer Empire and French colonialists on this stunning riverside city. Many celebrities and royal dignitaries have stayed here, and the walls are adorned with gorgeous black and white photos depicting their visits. You’re well catered for in terms of onsite dining options, the breakfast spread is particularly delightful and there’s a plush bar with generously long happy hour.
Weave through Phnom Penh’s colourful and chaotic streets in the comfort of a traditional cycle rickshaw with a private guide, whilst you admire the city’s eclectic architecture and discover hidden sights.
There’s more than first meets the eye to Cambodia’s capital and this is one of our favourite experiences. In the evening why not either dine at one of the capital’s top-notch restaurants, or for something more casual and immersive, walk around the atmospheric markets or join a foodie tour and zig-zag on the back of a Vespa to sample local street food.
While in Phnom Penh it is difficult to escape the country’s recent dark history, and a visit to the remarkable Genocide Museum and the infamous Killing Fields of Choeung offers a vivid reminder of the Khmer Rouge reign. Pol Pot’s brutal attempt to create a society without class resulted in nearly two million people dying from execution, starvation or disease. Although it may be emotionally distressing, your guide will give an honest insight into Cambodia’s tragic modern history.Accommodation: Raffles Le Royal (2 nights)

Days 6-10: Koh Rong Archipelago
Today you’ll leave behind the urban sprawl of the metropolis as you travel overland for four-hours to Sihanoukville in the south of the country (it is also possible to take a flight to cut down the travel times). From here, it’s a just short ride onboard a gleaming speedboat over to the idyllic Song Saa, a stunning private island hideaway, offering a true paradisiacal escape. Some of the spacious 27 villas are enveloped around trees in the jungle, others are perched above the shimmering turquoise waters with steps leading down into the sea, and all have a large terrace for outdoor lounging and private pool. This super exclusive sanctuary is the epitome of barefoot luxury, offering superb service and dining options to suit gourmet aficionados as well as even the fussiest eaters.
There are also some fantastic activities available including island hopping boat tours, visits to local villages, jungle treks, snorkelling in crystal clear marine waters, kayaking through mangroves and of course the now obligatory wellness centre complete with revitalising spa treatments and yoga sessions. That is of course, if you can drag yourself away from the infinity pool with its dreamy daybeds or the picture perfect quiet sandy beaches! Although, it’s likely that you’ll spend a considerable amount some time at the wonderful restaurant and bar with its 360-degree ocean views, perfect for supping up the sunset whilst working through the tantalising cocktail options.Accommodation: Song Saa (4 nights)
