Best time to Visit

Good time to visit

Average time to visit

Buenos Aires and Iguazu Falls are year round destinations, with pleasant temperatures. January and February are usually the hottest months whilst the winter months (June and July) tend to be cooler (and wetter in the city). With fairly tropical conditions all year, it's the water levels at the Iguazu Falls that can vary depending on rainfall in the surrounding area - December to February tend to be wetter, compared to the driest months (June and July), however, you'll be rewarded with stunning vistas regardless of the season.

In general, the weather is good almost all year round in Salta and the North West. It’s warm and dry in winter (June to September) though it gets cold at night. Summer (December to February) is hot but it is best to avoid the rainy season of February and March, when some of the roads to places you'll want to explore may be impassable due to flooding.

Patagonia is best visited from November to March when temperatures are milder but visitors should be prepared for strong winds and changeable weather at any time. It is worth considering travelling outside this time, especially rewarding in April (for autumn colours) or October (for spring flowers) because winds can drop significantly and there are fewer visitors in the National Parks. May to September is winter and many hotels in Southern Patagonia close for the season.

Itinerary

From iconic highlights to remote reaches, this is the trip for those who really want to get under the skin of Argentina. The focus here is on the experience – we’ve hand-picked the properties and activities that will put you at the heart of the action. It’s not so much about the thread count or the number of spa treatments available as it is about making sure you are in the right place to dive straight into everything Argentina has to offer. Brace yourselves for a holiday to remember!

  1. Fly to Buenos Aires

  2. Days 1-3: Buenos Aires

Your base for the next two nights will be the beautiful boutique hotel Legado Mitico. Right in the heart of the buzzing Palermo Soho neighbourhood, you’ve got many of the city’s best restaurants and cafes on your doorstep. On your one full day in the city, we’ll arrange a private guide to give you an all-encompassing tour of Buenos Aires’ many distinct barrios. Delve deeper into Palermo and be dazzled by the vibrant street art and many green spaces. Stroll the elegant boulevards of Recoleta and visit the renowned cemetery where many famous people are buried. Wander the cobbled streets and eclectic markets of San Telmo, known for its enticing bohemian vibe. No visit to Buenos Aires is complete without taking in a tango show. We’ll book you a table at Café de los Angelitos and you can tuck into a three-course meal while the mesmerising dancers run rings around one another with their perfect footwork.

    Accommodation: Legado Mitico (2 nights)

  3. Days 3-4: Salta

Your journey into Argentina’s remote northwest begins as you fly to Salta to spend one night. The city is the springboard from which to leap into the region’s wild surroundings, but it’s also got a lot to offer in its own right. Leafy boulevards and grand Baroque architecture characterise the city, which is a relic of Argentina’s Spanish colonial era. We’ll hook you up with one of our expert guides for a private walking tour, taking in the myriad historical buildings including elaborate churches and convents as well as the Museum of High Altitude Archaeology, which offers a fascinating insight into the Inca footprint in Salta. Just a stone’s throw from the main plaza, your base for the night is Legado Mitico Salta, a converted townhouse and now a characterful boutique hotel.

Accommodation: Legado Mitico Salta (1 night)

  4. Days 4-5: Tilcara

Today is a true highlight of the trip in our eyes as you venture into little chartered territory. Prepare to have your soul stirred by the other-worldly scenery and soak up the serenity of this far-flung corner of the country where visitors are few and far between. You’ll set off early to be driven to the town of Purmarmca which sits at the base of the bewitching Seven Colours Hill. From there, you’ll head to the breaking point between the Eastern and Western Andes, where these magnificent mountains give way a high-altitude plateau called the Puna. In this giant depression you’ll find the Salinas Grandes – vast salt flats which extend for over 100 kilometres in a seemingly endless mirror-like landscape. Marvel at the perfectly geometric Cono de Arita or the carpet of pink that engulfs Laguna Grande as thousands of flamingos hover above the water. These are scenes that will push the boundaries of your imagination. You’ll spend the night at the simple but comfortable Las Marias del Tilcara ready to continue your explorations the following day.

Accommodation: Las Marias Hotel Boutique (1 night)

  5. Days 5-6: Salta

Continuing your off-the-grid adventures, today you will venture to Quebrada de Humahuaca, a vast gorge which reaches to the border of Bolivia. Be dazzled by colourful mountains with red, yellow and pink hues. Ogle at weird and wonderful geological formations and visit historical villages with unique handicraft markets bursting with authentic Andean wares. As you are driven from place to place, relish in the journey. For in this wild and rugged corner of Argentina, the journey is as rewarding as the destination. You will weave through winding valleys and traverse boundless landscapes while scarcely encountering another car. There’s no feeling quite like the open road stretching out ahead of you, with no interruption as far as the eye can see. You will conclude the day back in Salta, where you’ll spend another night at Legado Mitico Salta ahead of your onward flight tomorrow.

Accommodation: Legado Mitico Salta (1 night)

  6. Days 6-8: El Calafate, Southern Patagonia, Argentina

Swapping the arid cactus-dotted deserts of the northwest for the glittering glaciers of the south, today you fly to El Calafate in Argentine Patagonia. Your base for the next two nights is the cosy boutique hotel Esplendor El Calafate. You will have a full day to explore the mesmerising splendour of Perito Moreno Glacier – one of the world’s only advancing glaciers. You’ll be met early by your guide and driven through the striking landscapes of Los Glaciares National Park towards the electric blue hues of Perito Moreno Glacier. Embark on a lake navigation to the south wall of the glacier to gain an unrivalled perspective on this immense wonder from the water. Simultaneously inherently peaceful and spine-tinglingly dramatic, as huge chunks of ice calve off into the lake below. Returning to shore, you’ll tuck into a picnic lunch on the walkways looking out at the glacier.

Accommodation: Esplendor El Calafate (2 nights)

  7. Days 8-11: Iguazu Falls

Today you fly to Iguazu for the final stop of your adventure. A complex chain of 275 falls that span across a distance of almost three kilometres, Iguazu Falls promises not to disappoint. You’ll finish your trip on a high with three nights at Loi Suites located in a peaceful jungle setting. You will arrive late afternoon and have time for a dip in the refreshing pool. You will be met the following morning by your private guide who will take you on a half day tour of the cascades across the Brazilian border. The rest of the afternoon can be spent at the falls, in the town or back at the hotel, relaxing in a hammock. Your last full day will be spent strolling around the Argentine side of the falls, with your private guide. Stand and absorb this epic natural wonder, feel the spray on your skin and relish in the closing moments of an unforgettable holiday.

Accommodation: Loi Suites Iguazú Hotel (3 nights)

  8. Fly home via Buenos Aires

Devour one last breakfast before you are transferred to the airport for your homeward flight.
