Best time to Visit

Good time to visit

Average time to visit

Zambia has a moderate to sub-tropical climate with three distinct seasons: from November to March is the Emerald, or the rainy season, April to July is Zambia's winter, when the weather is cool and dry, and August to October is summer, when the weather is hot and dry. In terms of game-viewing, the drier months, meaning a higher concentration of game at the permanent water sources, are a superb time to visit. Alternatively come for some superb bird-watching at the end of the rains.

To start planning your holiday to Bilimungwe Bush Camp

Set on a small hill with a wonderfully game-rich waterhole in front, Bilimungwe is a very intimate and beautifully designed little camp and offers superb game-viewing by vehicle or on foot.

Set in the shade of enormous mahogany trees, Bilimungwe Bush Camp is a superb little camp. Surrounded by flood-plains and three waterholes which attract a variety of game, Bilimungwe is a great place to see some of Luangwa's best game.

While the waterholes around camp provide some stunning game-viewing right from the decked main area, activities here focus on getting out into the bush to explore. Day and night game drives in open 4X4 vehicles are on offer as are walks through the shaded mahogany groves which are typical of this side of the park. Towering sausage trees, winterthorn and the natal mahogany grow in stands along the banks of the river, providing plenty of hiding places for the many animals found here. In the evenings, your game drive, after a stop for sundowners on the banks of the river, will become a spot-lit night drive - the Bilimungwe area is superb for predators and leopard and lion are often spotted, along with other predators such as the hyena, genet, civet and even the rare serval.

Bilimungwe works perfectly in combination with one or more of its sister-camps - Kuyenda, Mfuwe Lodge, Chamilandu, Chindeni, Kapamba and Zungulila. Ask us how to put together the perfect trip to explore this wild and remote area of the South Luangwa.

Bilimungwe Bush Camp features four raised thatched roof chalets. Two of the chalets have twin beds and two have double beds. The rooms are furnished with locally crafted rich mahogany furniture to blend in with the scenery that surround them. They are adorned with bright African textiles to add a splash of colour. The rooms are all en-suite and have a lovely open-air waterfall shower.

Children over the age of 12 years are welcome to come and stay at the camp. Children under 12 years are only permitted if a private camp is booked. There are no specific child friendly facilities available at Bilimungwe Bush Camp but children are bound to have a fun and educational time during their stay.

The award-wining resident guide Manda Chisanga will take you out on a combination of walking safaris, day and night game drives and sundowner's on the banks of the Luangwe River. In between outings, there are plenty of comfortable places to sit at the camp and enjoy the surroundings or to curl up with a good book.

  • Game Drives in the South Luangwa

Game drives are the most common way of exploring the African bush. A vehicle allows you to cover distance quickly and comfortably and offers visitors the best opportunity of getting very close to wildlife in a safe and controlled way.

  • Green Season Game Drives

The Green Season, Rainy Season, Emerald Season, Secret Season - what ever you decide to call it, this is a beautiful time of year to be on safari. Activities are rarely disrupted by weather and the bush is full of life.

  • Night Drives

If you get the opportunity to head out after sunset you should take it. The bush transforms under the cover of darkness as the nocturnal wildlife gets going. Using a spotlight your guide will scan the bush for eye-shine picking out some great action.
