Honolulu is a year round destination with a tropical climate, with the very best months being April to September. Temperatures are high throughout the year but never excessive, as humidity levels are manageable. There is a rainy season from December to March which is also ironically, the tourism high season, when the scenery is at its most lush and long, hot days break up the rainy spells.

Perched on Honolulu’s legendary Waikiki Beach with a front-row view of surfers riding the waves, Halekulani is a sleek and sophisticated luxury hotel with the kind of service and facilities that definitely put you centre stage.
Originally built in 1907 and now completely made over into a contemporary luxury hotel of the first order, Halekulani’s 453 rooms span five spacious buildings, surrounded by open courtyards, lush tropical gardens and balmy ocean breezes.
The hotel boasts an award-winning spa and a wide range of water sports, including outrigger canoe rides, surfing, snorkelling, sailing and more so that you can make the most of Waikiki's world-famous beach culture. But if you're not feeling quite so beachy, the freshwater pool with its glass mosaic tiles designed as a rare orchid, is a work of art and provides a relaxing place for a swim. The hotel’s spa, SpaHalekulani, allows you to fully explore the healing culture of the Pacific with a full menu of massages, facial and body treatments. For families travelling with children, a kids’ programme is provided during the summer months and at Christmas.
Halekulani’s rooms are incredibly spacious, and most have fabulous ocean views to enjoy from your private terrace. The décor combines a number of different shades of white, which, combined with the aquamarine of the Pacific, almost provide the feel of being in an aquarium. Large sitting areas consist of bamboo love-seats and chairs, while glass-topped cocktail tables and marble-topped desks also feature. State-of-the-art technology includes 46-inch flat-screen TV, a DVD/CD entertainment centre, and complimentary wireless Internet access. Bathrooms feature a deep soaking tub, a separate glassed-in shower, and a marble basin. For an unforgettable experience, book the Diamond Head suite, with stunning volcano views.
The hotel's signature restaurant, La Mer, features neoclassical French cuisine, and has long been recognized as one of Hawaii's top restaurants, while House Without a Key is surely one of the world’s most romantic spots for a sunset cocktail or a light meal under the hotel’s 100-year-old kiave tree.

Honolulu is synonymous with Waikiki beach which begins a couple of minutes walk from the Modern and stretches all the way down the coast to Diamond Head. Waikiki is a popular place to take surf lessons and is fun for people watching. Away from the beach, there are shopping opportunities galore, from upmarket designer labels such as Tiffany and Coach to Macy's and the ubiquitous surf shops.
Downtown Honolulu offers a world apart from bustling Waikiki with its colonial palaces and buildings, museums and parks and is a 15 minute drive from the hotel. Pearl Harbor & the Pacific Historic Parks is worth spending at least half a day to take in the USS Arizona Memorial, Pacific Aviation Museum, USS Bowfin and USS Missouri. It's a 45 minute drive from Waikiki and can be combined with a visit to Oahu's less developed North Shore - scene of epic waves and surf contests in the winter (November to March).

Halekulani is a remarkably serene and luxurious property located on the famous surf beach of Waikiki. With amazing restaurants, pools, spa and fitness centre, there is plenty to keep you occupied on-site. To top it off, many of the beautiful coastal-contemporary rooms and suites have unobstructed views of either the Pacific Ocean or the iconic extinct volcano that overlooks the bay, Diamond Head.

I must admit, first impressions here weren't the best, just because it seems a big hotel to begin with and I always feel that the smaller the hotel, the warmer the welcome. First impressions can be wrong, from the moment we arrived we were greeted with happy smiles and fantastic service. We were whisked up to our room straight away and check in was done actually in our room along with a quick guide to everything in the room to familiarise ourselves, then we were all set for our Waikiki experience to begin. It started with the view! 90% of rooms at the Halekulani have at least some ocean view and we caught our first glimpse of Diamond Head and the surfers sitting waiting for the waves just off shore. The hotel only has a small piece of beach out the front, however, walk just a minute or so each way and you're on wider, golden sands of Waikiki beach where you can grab a surf board and take a lesson or head out on a catamaran, or simply dip your toes into the warm water. Back at the hotel, as the sun set we headed for the House without a Key, the hotel's relaxed dining and cocktail lounge. There we settled in for a little sundowner while listening to a live band strumming Hawaiian soothing sounds and watching a lovely lady dancing hula. It was such a Hawaiian experience, you can be in no doubt where you are. Set behind the hotel, the designed shops, buzz and restaurants are mere moments away, however, the hotel is a lovely oasis right in the heart of it all, perfect for a few days in this busiest of the Hawaiian Islands.
