Best time to Visit

Good time to visit

Average time to visit

Tanzania is a large country, with a varied climate. Generally, the long rains run from March to May - the temperature is warm and the humidity is high. June to October is the long dry season, and the short rains are in November and December, much lighter than the long rains. January and February are again dry (the short dry season) so this is another good time to visit.

Witness astonishing wildlife, everchanging landscapes and charming east African hospitality on this all-encompassing trip adventuring through northern Tanzania. This safari circuit combines authentic tented camps in prime wildlife viewing areas taking you closer to the action and is topped off with a stay on the radiant beaches of Zanzibar, just off the coast of Tanzania.

  1. Fly to Kilimanjaro

  2. Days 1-2: Arusha, Serengeti and northern Tanzania, Tanzania

See if you can catch a glimpse of snow-capped Mount Kilimanjaro as your flight descends to the airport. On arrival, you’ll be met by your specialist driver/guide who will be with you for the duration of your trip through northern Tanzania. From here your guide will drive you to the rural town of Arusha, where you’ll relax and catch up on some sleep at Rivertrees Country Inn, set in an exquisite riverside location surrounded by lush gardens.

Accommodation: Rivertrees Country Inn (1 night)

  3. Days 2-4: Tarangire National Park

Your safari adventure begins today. Your guide will drive you to your first stop, Tarangire National Park. This is a far less visited national park on the circuit so you can enjoy some spectacular wildlife sightings in this vast wilderness with lower visitor densities. As you enter the park and game drive through it, you’ll pass huge herds of elephants surrounded by open woodlands and acacia trees. Your base for the next two nights is Kichuguu Camp. After settling into camp and enjoying a delicious lunch on the deck, you will spend the rest of the day exploring the ravines and swamps which are teeming with wildlife.  Passing the Tarangire River, watch in astonishment as you witness an enormous herd of elephants, ambling along the riverbank. It is common to see herds of up to 300 elephants in the dry season here, so you will really get a sense of the magnitude of these giants.

    Accommodation: Kichuguu Camp (2 nights)

  4. Days 4-6: Ngorongoro Crater

This morning you will continue your journey up into the highland region of Karatu. As you drive into this town, you’ll pass rolling hills of lush and coffee plantations. You will arrive at Plantation Lodge, your home for the next two nights. After settling in, let your senses guide you through the stunning gardens encasing the lodge as you amble past frangipani and jacaranda plants, with the sounds of exotic birds surrounding you. Today you’ll have the chance to visit a local coffee plantation or just indulge in the delicious food and laze by the pool. In the morning feel your excitement build as you journey to the Ngorongoro Crater, just 45 minutes away from the lodge. As you wind up the hilly roads, passing dense forest and baboons on the roadside you’ll arrive at the top of the crater and marvel at one of the most astonishing views in Africa. Descend onto the crater floor and spend your morning winding through the roads passing animals such as lions and rhino. You will only need 3-4 hours to explore the crater properly so you’ll head back to Karatu where you can enjoy the rest of the day at your own pace.

Accommodation: The Plantation Lodge (2 nights)

  5. Days 6-8: Serengeti National Park

Today you journey to the depths of the Serengeti. Leaving the Ngorongoro conservation area, you will pass little villages and as you get closer to the Serengeti, you’ll see plains game dotting the landscapes. As you enter the south of the Serengeti, gaze out at the never-ending plains of this vast land. You will game drive up to central Serengeti, arriving at your base for the next 2 nights, Kiota Camp. This is a wonderfully authentic tented camp located right in the heart of the bush, bringing you close to the action. After relishing on lunch in the shade of an acacia tree, you will game drive for the rest of the afternoon. The Serengeti is famed for big cat sightings, so you’ll have the chance to see elegant cheetahs prowling the savannah for prey and strikingly beautiful leopards escaping the heat of the day in the acacia tree tops. In the evening, after a delicious home-cooked dinner, gather around the roaring campfire with the other guests and reminisce on your trip so far. Enjoy a drink of Amarula and listen to the sounds of the bush under the star-flecked night sky.

    Accommodation: Kiota Camp (2 nights)

  6. Days 8-10: Serengeti National Park

Follow in the footsteps of one of the natural world’s greatest phenomenon’s, the Great Migration. As you drive north, watch the landscapes change as you pass rocky outcrops and clusters of enormous boulders. Stop for lunch in the shade of these rocks and if you’re lucky you may see a pride of lions basking in the sun on top.  As you arrive in the north, you may encounter the migration and watch in astonishment at the sheer enormity of it. Your base for the final nights of your safari is Chaka Camp, a mobile camp which is perfectly positioned to see the migration. The remainder of your time in the Serengeti will be focusing on catching a river crossing. The bonus of having a private guide and vehicle really becomes apparent here; park up and wait in anticipation at a prime river crossing spot and feel the thundering movements of thousands of wildebeest cross the mighty Mara river at any point. Without the obstruction of other guests in the vehicle you can thoroughly enjoy this spectacle and get some incredible photos. Whilst the migration is the focus, you’ll see some of the most diverse wildlife sightings in Africa here as predators come to the Mara River seeking out the prey clambering cross it.

    Accommodation: Chaka Camp (2 nights)

  7. Days 10-15: Zanzibar Coast, Tanzania

It’s time for a change of pace after your adrenaline filled safari adventure. This morning after a final game drive, soaking up more of the Serengeti, you’ll bid farewell to your guide and board a light aircraft flight to the exotic island of Zanzibar. A representative from your hotel will greet you at the airport and drive you to the east of the island, which is renowned for its talcum-soft beaches. You will arrive at Breezes Beach Club & Spa, which has an authentic Zanzibari style. Spend the next 5 days unwinding on this radiant coastline, enjoying the delicious seafood and the warm hospitality that east Africa is so famed for. If you need a dose of culture, soak up the fascinating history in Stone Town, Zanzibar’s capital, and meander down the narrow streets lined with beautiful architecture and bursting with colourful spice markets.

Accommodation: Breezes Beach Club & Spa (5 nights)
