Average time to visit

Tanzania is a large country, with a varied climate. Generally, the long rains run from March to May - the temperature is warm and the humidity is high. June to October is the long dry season, and the short rains are in November and December, much lighter than the long rains. January and February are again dry (the short dry season) so this is another good time to visit.

Enjoy a week long adventure exploring the Northern circuit of Tanzania. This itinerary focuses on the two major highlights of Northern Tanzania, The Ngorongoro Crater and the rolling plains of the Serengeti. These two parks offer astounding scenery that will make an ever-lasting impression along with some fantastic wildlife watching opportunities.

  1. Fly to Kilimanjaro

  2. Days 1-2: Arusha, Tanzania

Arrive into Kilimanjaro airport, where you will be collected and driven to Arusha in the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro for a one-night stay. Here you can lounge by the pool, dine on delicious food, take a tour of the coffee plantation and of course sample a coffee made from the local beans. This first night allows you to wind down from your long haul flight before you head off on your safari tomorrow.

Accommodation: Elewana Arusha Coffee Lodge (1 night)

  3. Days 2-4: Ngorongoro Crater

Today you will meet your guide and set off on your African Safari. A private guide gives you the flexibility to set the pace of each day, and spend as long as you wish with a wildlife sighting, rather than being swayed by other travellers in your safari vehicle.

In your private vehicle you will take roads along the Great Rift Valley Escarpment, stopping on the way to admire the stunning views of Lake Manyara below, before continuing your journey through the coffee farms of the Ngorongoro Highlands. The following day you will explore the unique Ngorongoro Crater, a dormant volcano whose caldera is home to high concentrations of wildlife including the Big Five. The view of the crater alone makes this a highlight of your safari.

Accommodation: The Plantation Lodge (2 nights)

  4. Days 4-7: Serengeti National Park

A trip to northern Tanzania is not complete without a visit to the famous endless plains of the Serengeti. Today you will fly to this famous National Park where you will spend three nights in a mobile tented camp. The benefit of a mobile camp is that it moves every few months to provide you the best position for game viewing, and if you are travelling in migration season this should increase your chances of seeing the vast numbers of wildebeest and zebra, known as the Great Migration, as they roam the plains in search of fresh grazing. Aside from the Great Migration, the game viewing is still second to none. Your days will be spent on morning and afternoon game drives in search of large herds of elephants roaming the plains, cheetahs alert and looking out over the savannah in search of their next meal, and prides of lion lounging in the shade of the acacia trees.

Return to camp in the evenings to enjoy a relaxing shower followed by drinks and snacks around the campfire, before dining under the stars.

    Accommodation: Ubuntu Camp (3 nights)

  5. Fly from Kilimanjaro

  • Game drive in the Serengeti

Explore the vast grasslands of the Serengeti with your safari guide on game drives in the early morning and late afternoon. This is one of the most famous national parks in Africa, and it's easy to see why.

  • Ngorongoro Crater game drive

Explore the dormant volcanic caldera of the Ngorongoro Crater in a safari vehicle - this is a unique location for a game drive and the dramatic scenery really adds to the magic.

  • Visit to the Shanga workshop

Pay a visit to the Shanga workshop in Arusha, a local, socially-conscious, company which employs people with disabilities to create stunning hand-made jewellery and glassware. Admire the beautiful creations while contributing to the local community.
