Practical info

We've put together a list of practical information to help you get to know Tanzania.

Practical Info

Treat locals with respect and honour local customs and culture in your behaviour and speech. Elders, chiefs and other authority figures warrant particular politeness. Be conservative when using a camera, especially in seldom-visited areas. Always ask permission when photographing people.

We recommend that you leave a tip for all lodge/camp staff with the manager or in the tipping box (so as not to forget the people behind the scenes) of approximately $5-$10 per person per day. In addition, you may wish to tip your guide separately. Please note that this is subject to your discretion, though if you choose to do so we recommend $5-10 a per person, per day.

Many purchases involve a degree of bargaining. This is always the case with things bought from their markets and street stalls.

Visa requirements:

If you hold a full British passport then you do require visas for Tanzania. These can be obtained either prior to departure, or on arrival, at a cost of US$50 per person (payable in cash). You will also require at least two blank pages in your passport for immigration stamps and endorsements. If you do obtain the visa before you depart it will obviate the need to queue for a visa on arrival.

Please note that from recent feedback, some guests have found it a lengthy process getting visas on arrival in Dar es Salaam so we highly recommend that you obtain your visas in advance before travelling to avoid these queues.

Please note you will need a transit visa when returning to Nairobi from Zanzibar which costs US$10 per person.

** Please note that it is our understanding that at present you do not require a transit visa for Nairobi if you don’t leave the airport, despite changing airlines, but it may be advisable to keep US$30 per person in case this changes.**
