The Winelands are a wonderful year-round destination and enjoys a mild Mediterranean climate, somewhat like the South of France, which is what makes the area perfect for grape-growing. Summer is the reverse of the Northern hemisphere. The best season visit is September to March when it is hot, sunny and dry. From April to August it cools down with some rain.

Delaire Graff is one of the Winelands most luxurious and exclusive hotels and is ideally situated between the two main wineland towns of Stellenbosch and Franschhoek. We arrived here just in time for a glass of wine and a chance to watch the spectacular sunset over the vineyards.
The service and attention to detail here really is second to none and it is the epitome of luxury, guests staying here will want for nothing and if they do, the staff at Delaire will be able to organise it.
We dined at the Asian inspired Indochine restaurant and the food and wine does not disappoint with beautifully presented dishes made using the freshest ingredients and paired with spectacular wine recommended by the restaurants sommelier.

A polished and modern resort perched on the slopes, Delaire is quite one of the most luxurious options in the whole of the winelands and comes with a price tag to match! No attention to detail has been spared, from the manicured gardens and the vineyards beyond (perfectly pin sharp rows of grape vines stretch into the distance) to the rooms, elegantly designed with clean lines and muted colours and just perfect for honeymooners or adults although oddly children of any age are accepted here. There are no child facilities per se, although a cinema room will keep the littlies occupied for a few hours while Mum and Dad enjoy dinner. The food here is a complete revelation we dined briefly in the Indochine, an Asian fusion restaurant, and were not disappointed. The food was exquisite perfectly balanced and beautifully and cleverly presented. Delaire feels large but is quite small with just ten rooms all overlooking sensational winelands views - not so much a touch of luxury as a large dollop in some of the most scenic countryside in the whole country.

Although we only stopped at Delaire for a wine tasting and lunch I was taken aback by the beauty of the estate. The valley stretched out ahead of the property with vineyards growing on all sides and huge oak trees stretching off into the distance. In complete contrast stands the hotel, made up of a main building full of glass and stone which houses the barrel room and restaurant and surrounded by the individual rooms dotted through the gardens.
Each room is essentially a small villa with lovely large living rooms, glass fronted bedrooms looking down the valley and private decks with plunge pools. Again the feel is modern but still very warm and welcoming.
The main event at Delaire is not the rooms but the food and the wines. We tasted some fantastic whites including their Chenin Blanc, one of the best we tried anywhere on our tour of the winelands. The restaurant Indochine is Asian inspired and makes a fantastic change after heavier options being served up elsewhere. I enjoyed a fantastic octopus salad and duck which was presented impeccably. They say they are looking for a Michelin star, I do not think it will be far away.

On its own away from the hustle and bustle, Delaire is found midway between the two famous wineland towns of Stellenbosch and Franschhoek. This beautiful winery is perched on the side of a hill with dramatic views over the rugged surrounding countryside. A small number of spacious chalets all come complete with their own plunge pool and full butler service. The atmosphere at Delaire is very calming, focus is on attention to detail and exceptional service in a dramatic location only 1 hour from central Cape Town. Indochine, the on site restaurant has been voted in the top ten restaurants in South Africa and there arent many better places to enjoy lunch accompanied by a cool glass of rose from the winery next door.

Delaire Graff is the brainchild of Lawrence Graff, of Graff Diamonds based on Bond Street in London. It is one of those truly special places that are few and far between. Set just outside of Stellenbosch, perched on the Drakenstein Mountains, this is the new best thing in the Western Cape. The main areas and the private lodges are adorned with striking pieces of art all by local artists. The views are breathtaking and look even better and more atmospheric than all of the brochure shots that you'll have been drooling over prior to your stay (like me!). When Louisa and I arrived in the late afternoon we were whisked away to our Owner's Lodge and actually squealed when we saw where we would be spending the night. The rooms are beautifully decorated in lush, heavy silks and muted tones which are incredibly luxurious. The attention to detail is staggering! There are little bed-time notes, delicious Jo Malone bathroom products and fantastic pre-dinner canaps, to name but a few. Each lodge also has its own private deck and large plunge pool for you to relax by as the sun goes down in the afternoon. The service is fantastic and so on the mark but it is ultra discreet and not constantly looking for recognition. Every room has its own private butler who will serve you throughout your stay, including breakfast and dinner. Not one request is too much trouble and the staff will go out of their way to ensure that your every need is met. Everyone was very unassuming and extremely friendly. I was worried that coming from such a grand background as Graff Diamonds, that it could have the possibility of being aloof or arrogant but this just wasn't the case in the slightest. The emphasis on the Asian-infused food at Delaire is about fresh, healthy, light eating. It is in keeping with the overall wellness feel at Delaire (there is also a fantastic spa and state-of-the-art gym). The food is simply divine, with dishes such as Poached Quail's Breast in Green Tea with Black Noodles, there is not one heavy, overly-rich option in sight and it's really refreshing in South Africa, where it's possible to feel quite stuffed after just a few days! This really is a one-in-a-million property. You'll fall in love immediately and be so wowed to the very end of your stay that you'll find it hard to move on.
