The climate in New Zealand is incredibly pleasant, with warm and balmy summers and cold crisp winter months with wonderful clear, blue skies. The warmer high-season months of November to April are perfect for outdoor exploration. The colder months of June to August are the best time to ski.
Both North and South Islands are drier on the east coast, rather than on the west, where mountain ranges act as a trap for the moisture-rich winds from the Tasman Sea. It is also worth remembering that it is usually a few degrees cooler on the South Island than the North Island and as New Zealand has a maritime climate, the weather can change rapidly.

Manakau Lodge is a cosy owner-run guesthouse in Kaikoura, with stunning views from its gardens over the Seaward mountain range. There are just four comfortable rooms here, offering an affordable and homely base for exploring the area.
Manakau Lodge is a lovely small guesthouse located just on the edge of Kaikoura in a rural spot surrounded by farmland, so you can enjoy some spectacular night skies here. The town centre is just a ten-minute drive away, so it's ideally located for activities such as dolphin or whale watching, along with other area attractions.
There are just four cosy guest rooms here, all spacious and well appointed with thoughtful details to make sure you have every comfort you need. From underfloor heating in the bathrooms, to the iPad in each room which is packed full of information about things to see and do in the area, restaurant suggestions and even electric blankets if you're visiting in winter months; you'll struggle to lack for anything in your room. The rooms have sliding doors which lead out onto a small balcony, two of which have lovely views over the Seaward mountain range, which are snow-capped in the winter and spring.
The owner, Neil, is a great host and will help make reservations for dinner at a restaurant in town, or organise any activities. Dinners are not included so you'll need to try out one of the local eateries in the evenings, but there are plenty of good options a short drive away. Neil is also a professional photographer and also offers photographic excursions nearby if you want to perfect your photographic skills. Many of his photographs are found on the walls of the guesthouse, showing off New Zealand's landscapes in all their glory. Overall, this is a comfortable base for exploring Kaikoura and offers a warm welcome.

This is a really sweet little lodge. It has been well designed and all the rooms are very spacious and modern. Neil who manages the lodge is very knowledgeable of the surrounding area and is also a fantastic photographer - you can view is pieces all around the lodge. If you're looking to really escape from the world and surround yourself with beautiful scenery away from the crowds, Manakau Lodge is the place for you.

I really enjoyed my stay at this charming bed and breakfast. The rooms are really spacious and have lots of little luxurious touches, which show the thought and care that owner Neil has put into the place - no skimping on cheap bathroom products here! And the WiFi was super-fast, a rare thing in many parts of New Zealand. Breakfast was delicious and the coffee was strong. All in all, a great base for my stay in Kaikoura and I'd warmly recommend it.
