Average time to visit

The climate in New Zealand is incredibly pleasant, with warm and balmy summers and cold crisp winter months with wonderful clear, blue skies. The warmer high-season months of November to April are perfect for outdoor exploration. The colder months of June to August are the best time to ski.

Both North and South Islands are drier on the east coast, rather than on the west, where mountain ranges act as a trap for the moisture-rich winds from the Tasman Sea. It is also worth remembering that it is usually a few degrees cooler on the South Island than the North Island and as New Zealand has a maritime climate, the weather can change rapidly.

Bay of Many Coves is a stylish luxury lodge tucked into a cove of Queen Charlotte Sound in New Zealand’s stunning Marlborough Sounds. It's the ideal base for exploring, and fine-dining and exceptional service await at the end of your day's adventures.

Bay of Many Coves is a beautiful and luxurious lodge located in the heart of the Marlborough Sounds, accessed only by boat or helicopter. It’s the ideal base for active types looking to get out exploring the Sounds by boat, kayak or on foot, or exploring the more remote islands by helicopter with a picnic. But the tranquillity of the setting lends itself equally to simply relaxing and enjoying the serenity of the Sounds.

Twelve wooden suites overlook the bay of the same name in the Queen Charlotte Sound, each with a cosy lounge, kitchen and dining area and balcony, all with a focus on soaking up the beautiful views. There are plenty of luxurious touches such as underfloor heating in the bathrooms, soft woollen blankets made locally, and New Zealand-made bathroom products. There are floor-to-ceiling glass windows allowing you to enjoy the views from wherever you are, and shutters to open up your shower to the outdoors if you wish. The focus is on making the most of natural materials, using local woods, stone colours, woollen blankets and fine linens. There are one-bedroom, two-bedroom and three-bedroom suites available, and a premium Keruru suite offering the ultimate privacy.

Dining is very much a part of the experience of your stay, and the food here is amongst the very best you’ll find in New Zealand. Dinners are a-la-carte with suggested wines to match each dish, and no stay is complete without trying out the seven course degustation menu, a real highlight. Owner Murray is a real wine aficionado and works closely with the chefs to match the menus to the wine list (not the other way around), and offers wine tasting and advice to guests. His wife Elaine also lives on site, and the pair make wonderful hosts, ensuring you have everything you need to have a memorable stay. They can arrange truly unique excursions to explore the area, as well as more traditional experiences such as boat trips and kayaking.

Children of all ages are welcome at the Bay of Many Coves. However, as they pride themselves on creating and maintaining a sophisticated and relaxing environment for all of their guests, they do ask that you respect this by ensuring that children do not compromise the enjoyment of others.

The Foredeck restaurant is designed to provide a sophisticated and romantic dining experience and they therefore ask that young children not be in the Foredeck Restaurant after 7pm. They are pleased to offer alternative (and perhaps more suitable) evening dining options for children including the Bight Café (prior to 5.30pm), the Kumutage, or Room Service in your apartment.

Food and beverage facilities include Kumutage all day guest lounge, Foredeck Restaurant and Bight Cafe with Room Service available.

Katie Fewkes (Staff)

An idyllic location and a lodge to match. I absolutely adored my stay at the Bay of Many Coves. The staff can't do enough to look after you, and owners Murray and Elaine are such warm and genuine hosts. The food is exceptional in every way, as are the wines which you can match to each course at dinner if you wish. The Marlborough Sounds is one of the most peaceful and beautiful spots on the New Zealand coast, and what a wonderful base for exploring it, whether on foot, by kayak or in a boat exploring remote islands.

Whether you come here to unwind halfway through your trip or as a treat at the start or end of your New Zealand adventures, or are more active and get out and about to explore, Bay of Many Coves is a special spot and one of my favourites on South Island. Expect genuinely warm hospitality, stunning food and the most beautiful setting.
