Average time to visit

If you're visiting Namibia, the best thing to do is avoid their summer, which is extremely hot. Therefore, the best time to visit Namibia is in winter (May-September) but bear in mind that the desert regions can be bitterly cold at this time of year. The climate of the southern coast is hospitable from February to May, but quite cool and misty year-round, and particularly windy in August.

There are two very distinct seasons at the Victoria Falls, the wet/flood season and the dry season. These seasons do not reflect the quantity of rain, rather reflect the volume of flow of the Zambezi River. From around March through to July the river surges in size as the rainfall in Angola and Zambia from months before swells the current. The falls are at their most dramatic at this time of year with huge columns of spray. The nights are cold and the days warm at this time of year. From around September to January the water levels drop, the falls are more accessible and views are clearer as the flow can drop in volume by 90%. It is worth noting that the rains come from late October through to February, this combined with high heat, 40 celsius or more, in October and November, causes high levels of humidity.

Itinerary

Fly to Victoria Falls
Day 1-3

Victoria Falls - the Zim side

Fly overnight to Victoria Falls, connecting via Johannesburg. Keep an eye out the window as you land for the tell-tale spray of Mosi Oa Tunya, ‘the Smoke Which Thunders’, which can often be seen blowing in the wind. Our local representative soon has you on your way to Victoria Falls town and 528 Victoria Falls. With only seven rooms, the hotel is a love letter to Zimbabwe; local art spices every space and the eclectic style blends with modern luxury for an enticing stay – where every nook is Insta-worthy. Chandeliers constructed of upcycled local glass cascade in the light filled halls, and even the handmade copper sinks sing with local history and craftsmanship. Sit out on the rooftop bar (sipping on an ice-cold local beer) and watch the lazy African sun set as the lights of Livingstone twinkle into life. Or perhaps recline by the pool in the dappled shade of the lush gardens and escape the humdrum.
The adrenaline capital of Africa, lose yourself in the thrill from the perfect location to explore the legendary Victoria Falls. Fly across the Batoka Gorge on a zipline wire or fly down the rapids of the mighty Zambezi, thundering over the cascades. Watch the sky turn to fire on a sunset cruise on the mighty Zambezi River, the waters reflecting the colours in a mesmerising spectacle. Dive into your own National Geographic moment and take to the skies in a helicopter, marvelling at the sheer size of the world’s largest waterfall.

Accommodation: 528 Victoria Falls ( 2 nights )
Day 3-6

The Caprivi

It’s an early start as you leave the buzz of the falls behind and are taken by private transfer to the wilds of Namibia’s Caprivi Strip. Crossing into Namibia, you leave the everyday behind as you journey to Nambwa Tented Lodge. Perched along the tranquil waterways of the Kwando River, mirroring the spectacular wildlife and lush scenery of Botswana’s Okavango Delta, Nambwa is a world away from the rest of the country’s arid beauty. Walk along the raised walkways watching hippos wallow in nearby pools before sitting on the panoramic deck, the firepit ready for late night drinks around the crackling flames. Set amidst the canopy, relish the views from your treehouse style tented suite, the spacious private deck idyllic for an armchair safari. Wake up the sound of the bush coming to life, and freshly made hot drinks and biscuits delivered directly to your door. Revel in the intimacy of this elegant camp, blending a natural elegance with a true sense of place.
Set out and explore the myriad adventures to be found in the wilds of the Caprivi, home to some of the largest herds of elephants to be found in Africa. As the golden dawn breaks over Bwabwata National Park, search for the elusive leopard on a morning game drive. Spend a languid afternoon, lazily drifting along the channels of the Kwando, where reflections of the sky make for the perfect Instagram photo. Dig deeper and immerse yourself the bush, feel the deep connection to place that a walking safari offers or perhaps enrich your stay with a visit to a nearby community project where you can see first-hand how safari can give back.

Accommodation: Nambwa Tented Lodge ( 3 nights )
Day 6-7

Windhoek

This morning you leave the halcyon Nambwa Tented Lodge and are driven to Katima Mulilo, where you catch a short flight to Windhoek. It’s only a short drive to the quiet residential streets where The Elegant Guesthouse can be found. Indulge in some modern comforts in this contemporary chic boutique hotel.  A mere 10 minute from the city centre, explore Namibia’s capital city with ease or simply lounge by the pool before catching up on the news on your room’s satellite TV. This evening a visit to Joe’s Beer House means sampling both the legendary Namibian hospitality as well as exotic game meats and more than a few local tipples.

Accommodation: The Elegant Guest House ( 1 night )
Day 7-10

NamibRand Nature Reserve

Your 4x4 is delivered to your hotel, where one of our local representatives take you through both the route to the desert, in addition to your large hire car. We take care of the little details including extra tyres and super cover, so you just have to worry about stopping to admire the vistas as you cross the striking landscapes along the way. Kwessi Dunes is located on the vast NamibRand Nature Reserve, 200,000 hectares of wilderness just ready to be discovered. An inspiration and role model of how to balance both conservation with financial sustainability, where you have an area larger than Greater London to play in, and not another soul in sight. Leave your car (and the ordinary) in the reception area, as you’re taken by a safari vehicle up the dunes to your lodge. Graceful oryx, the emblem of Wolwedans, negotiate the sands as you summit, before the sheer magnitude of your location is revealed. The barren mountains frame the horizon and the sweeping dunes spread out all around, it’s a place of staggering beauty and must be seen to believed.
The lodge is perched along the edge of the dunes, overlooking the epic wilderness of the NamibRand. Every element here makes the most of the extraordinary vistas, from the many sitting nooks to even your bed, there’s no escaping the exquisite and stark landscapes. Each spacious suite has private decks from which to get lost in, and the four poster beds allow you to wake up to one of the world’s best views. If you can drag yourself away from the horizons, unearth the desert with a plethora of excursions that break the mould. Track desert wildlife across the plains on a nature drive or realise the importance of the little things (from beetles to grass) on a bushman guided walk. Feel your adrenaline rush as you gallop across the desert on horseback or for something truly special sleep out under the finest stars imaginable at Kwessi Dunes’s unequalled ‘star gazer’ room. With the nearest village over 60km away, step away from normality and embrace another world.
