Best time to Visit

Good time to visit

Average time to visit

The best time to visit Namibia is between May and September, when it's cool and dry. Summer (November to March) is hot with heavy rains that sometimes make the gravel roads to the Namib completely impassable.

December and January see the main school holidays: so the coast is busier at this time.

To start planning your holiday to Pelican Point Lodge

Pelican Point Lodge is situated on the remote peninsula of Pelican Point at Walvis Bay. This unique lodge is in a converted building at the base of the lighthouse, surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean on one side and the Lagoon of Walvis Bay on the other.

Pelican Point is set 32 kilometres from Walvis Bay on a remote peninsula. The hotel is situated within the renovated harbour control tower, adjacent to the lighthouse which has been safely guiding ships into Walvis Bay Harbour since 1915. Surrounded by nothing but untouched beaches and with only the sound of the waves crashing against the shore, Pelican Point Lodge is a completely unique hotel and its remote location allows guests to completely relax, reflect, unwind and take in the spectacular scenery around them.

When the weather is good, you can relax on the deck and take in the views over the bay and the Namib Desert Dunes in the distance. The wildlife along this stretch of beach is plentiful; take a walk along the peninsula and see the thousands of seals surfing in the waves and basking in the sunshine. Whales and dolphin are also frequently spotted from the deck and jackal often roam right past the lodge. The bird life is also spectacular and damara-terns, cormorants and flamingos feed in the tranquil waters of the lagoon.

There are nine luxurious suites all designed within the Old Harbour Control Tower. Each of the suites are uniquely decorated but the most spectacular suite has to be the Captain's Cove Suite set at the top of the control tower with 360 degree views. All of the suites have either a shower or bath and a private deck from which you can enjoy the views and listen to the sounds of the ocean.

Pelican Point has a comfortable lounge and dining area both of which have been cleverly designed so they feel cosy and warm when the mist surrounds the lodge on the colder evenings and then make the most of the views and sea breezes on the clearer, warmer evenings. The staff at the lodge are very accommodating and for guests who wish to dine in the privacy of their suite or on their own deck, this can easily be arranged.

Take a picnic hamper or sundowner drinks and spend an afternoon exploring the Peninsula and everything that it has to offer. Alternatively, simply curl up on the sofa, relax and take in the spectacular scenery surrounding you. Pelican Point is the perfect spot for guests to completely switch off and unwind.

The drive 45 minute drive out to Pelican Point gives you an idea of the remoteness of the lodge and is an experience in itself! There is the option for a transfer across the sand to the hotel or, for more experienced drivers who have a 4x4 they can definitely try and make the drive themselves!

Although I have stayed at some of the most remote camps in Africa, I still didn't get the sense of remoteness that I did here, it is totally unique. The rooms are spacious and the honeymoon suite offers 360 Degree views while the first and ground floor rooms all have floor to ceiling windows to make the most of the views.

This is a photographers paradise and when the fog rolls in in the early mornings, head out with your camera and capture images of the flamingos, eerie oil tankers appearing from the mist, the seal colony, the shipwreck and if you are lucky, you may see a jackal or too making their way across the sand in search of food.

Pelican Point Lodge is situated in a stylishly converted building at the base of the lighthouse, at the end of the wind swept sand peninsular. As you drive up to the lodge along the sand bar you can see the lighthouse appearing from the mists in the distance with an eerie feel. The lodge in contrast to the stark location could not be more cosy with big sofas in the vast lounge with huge glass windows so you can soak up the insane views, while the wind whistles round the building. The rooms are very comfortable and have a contemporary beach chic feel with glass windows. My favourite room has to be the Captain's Cove suite at the top of the building which has a spectacular 360' panoramic vantage point.

Explore the peninsular which has some fantastic photographic opportunities at the seal colony, a short walk from the lodge, the decaying pier, flamingos and the huge tankers in the distance moored in the harbour. Pelican Point is a must for a couple of nights and is a great place to break the journey between Sossusvlei and Dameraland.
