Essaouira is well-known as a fishing port and heading down to the harbourside you'll find a bustling fish market perfectly set against a backdrop of striking blue fishermen boats all lined up in a row.  Alongside the port the wide stretch of beach is a popular spot for tourists and locals alike and is considered a fantastic location for windsurfing due to the Atlantic breeze.

From the port it is a short stroll up to the fort, built by the Portuguese in the 17th Century, from where you can enjoy fantastic views of the white-washed medina and see the cannons still standing there.

The market, or souk, is much smaller in comparison to Marrakech, and the wide streets make it easy to navigate. Essaouira is known as a haven for artists, so this is a great place to take a stroll and perhaps seek out a colourful souvenir to take home with you. The town was once heavily populated by Jewish inhabitants with over 30 synagogues and a Jewish cemetery which are well worth a visit.
