Belmond Casa de Sierra Nevada is an acclaimed Mexican cooking school and boutique hotel housed in a magnificent 18th-century casa in the heart of historic San Miguel de Allende, a charming colonial town in the highlands of central Mexico.

Housing one of Mexico’s most acclaimed cookery schools and an eclectic mix of traditional rooms and suites between four buildings, the Belmond Casa de Sierra Nevada provides a homely and charming base in the colonial town of San Miguel de Allende and reflects perfectly the colourful style of buildings which are present throughout the cobblestone streets.

The accommodation comprises 37 deluxe rooms and suites arranged amongst the main building and four colonial mansions dating back to the 16th century. Each room has a distinctive charm with beamed ceilings, warm Mexican tones and regional furnishings including contemporary art, antiques, exquisite fabrics and beautiful Talavera-tiled bathrooms. Suites have a fireplace, oversized bath with separate shower stall and a private terrace with plunge pool.

Cookery courses cover the different forms of Mexican cuisine, including traditional regional specialities and some of the more modern favourites, and are led by highly experienced in-house chefs with a real passion for the diverse local flavours and methods of cooking.

The hotel has two gourmet restaurants and a lovely patio bar overlooking the cobblestone streets, which provides a relaxed setting for pre-dinner cocktails. For pampering, the Laja Spa provides an array of invigorating beauty therapies including massage, facials, reflexology and body treatments.

Please note that the Belmond Casa de Sierra Nevada does not accept children under 16 years of age.

Please also note that the rooms and suites at the hotel are divided amongst five different buildings and one of these, Casa Parque, is a approximately a five minute walk from the other four and the main hotel facilities. The hotel can arrange transport between Casa Parque and the other houses if required.

The Belmond Casa de Sierra Nevada is housed in a beautiful traditional building with tons of character and charm. The fact it is spread over several buildings is not too much of an issue as distances are not long but it is definitely something to bear in mind, particularly when travelling in groups as it is difficult to house people together.

The Presidential Suite was amazing and great value - this would definitely be my recommendation if choosing to stay here; the views from the private roof terrace were simply stunning.

Although the food was delicious, the restaurant was uncomfortably hot, even at 10pm at night. Staff were really helpful though and service was spot on, providing mosquito spray when we didn't have any and bringing a fan over to help cool us down.

Spread among five 16th-century houses just a few blocks from the main city square, this hotel is as close as you'll get to top-of-the-line luxury in San Miguel. An official historic landmark originally built as a home for the town's archbishop in 1580, the property now has 33 rooms and suites, furnished with canopy king beds, colonial antiques, Talavera-tiled bathrooms, and private balconies (a few with views of the city's iconic Parroquia cathedral). There's a small spa with a menu of massages and wraps—all at reasonable prices. The swimming pool, currently closed for renovation, should reopen by late 2007.

What I really liked about this Belmond property is the privacy you get. Rooms are scattered between three charming courtyards, with private patios and lovely planting. Although it's probably better suited to a slightly older clientele, it's still a great base from which to discover San Miguel, and the cookery school is THE place to go if you want to brush up your Mexican culinary skills.
