Description

Begin your vacation with a few days unwinding on the Tanzanian coast at boutique beach retreat, Ras Kutani. Relaxation is absolutely the name of the game here and the spacious and stylish rooms are the perfect place to kick back. Rooms with hammocks and comfy chairs overlook either the lagoon or the beach, which stretches into the distance. You can kayak on the lagoon, soak up the sun on the beach with a cocktail in hand, or go horse-riding on the beach. This is the perfect place to relax and settle into vacation-mode before you set off on safari.

From Ras Kutani, you'll fly into the heart of the Selous, Africa’s largest protected wildlife area in southern Tanzania. Characterised by lakes, rivers and forests, the Selous is home to African wild dog, lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, hippo, giraffe and more, as well as some superb birding opportunities. With the mighty Rufiji flowing majestically through it, the Selous is a stunning reserve even by the high standards of Tanzania’s landscapes. As well as game drives, your safari camp Siwandu offers walking safaris, fly camping and boating safaris accompanied by expert guides, ensuring every day is different.

From the Selous you will fly out to the remote island of Pemba, north of Zanzibar for some barefoot beach time. Fundu Lagoon has just 18 rooms and suites dotted along the beach and up the hillside overlooking the sea, all linked by rustic wooden walkways. It's a true Robinson Crusoe hideaway, accessed only by speedboat to add to the sense of seclusion.

Spend your week here enjoying pampering spa treatments, kayaking through the mangroves, or sailing in a traditional dhow at sunrise in search of a resident pod of dolphins. Snorkelling and diving opportunities are amongst the best in Tanzania, particularly off the nearby island of Misali which is a lovely spot for a picnic, too.

Location & Directions

Ras Kutani, Selous Game Reserve & Zanzibar

Located on Tanzanian mainland coast, Ras Kutani is situated on a quiet stretch of white beach south of Dar es Salaam, then head 200 km west to the mighty Selous Game Reserve to Selous Safari Camp, before your final stay at Fundu Lagoon is on Pemba Island, in the Zanzibar archipelago, north of Zanzibar island itself.

When to go

Tanzania is a large country, with a varied climate. Generally, the long rains run from March to May - the temperature is warm and the humidity is high, and many lodges and camps are closed. June to October is the long dry season and is traditionally the most popular time to visit, offering great conditions for wildlife viewing and on the beach. The short rains are in November and December, much lighter than the long rains. January and February are again dry (the short dry season) so this is another good time to visit although it can be quite humid in Southern Tanzania and on the coast.
