Baqueira resort guide

Billed as one of Europe’s best-kept secrets, Baqueira in the Pyrenees is Spain’s finest resort; great for intermediates, modern and family-friendly, and your best chance to enjoy tapas in a snowy mountain setting.

Baqueira

Set in the heart of the Pyrenees, Spain’s best resort is excellent for intermediate skiers, and billed by some as one of Europe’s best-kept secrets.

Set amid dramatic scenery in the heart of the Pyrenees, Baqueira is one of Europe’s best-kept skiing secrets, a favourite of King Juan Carlos and the Spanish Royal Family. Though the modern architecture doesn’t conjure up a classic chocolate-box ski resort , family-friendly Baqueira is Spain’s best and largest winter resort offering fine dining and lively nightlife. It’s perfect for keen skiers and boarders with extensive intermediate terrain and off-piste possibilities. Best of all, Baqueira’s fast high-capacity lifts mean that rush hour queues are almost unheard of.

On the mountain

There are 3 main linked areas - Beret, Baqueira and Bonaigua. Beret continues to invest and improve, maintaining its status as Spain’s leading resort with the largest skiable domain in Spain. A new high-speed 6-seater chairlift called Jorge Jordana now connects the Orri area with Cap de Baqueira, the highest point of the resort. It provides access to the entire mountain, including some of the resort’s best-known slopes such as Manaudand and Escornacrabes; and for the first time it’s possible to access the north face using a single lift. Experts will find the most challenging terrain off piste; intermediates have lots of long runs to play on; and for beginners there are good nursery slopes above Baqueira. The resort also has two snowparks.

Mountain restaurants

Baqueira has a variety of restaurants, all of which are run by the lift company. Fine dining is mainly regional specialities, but with some French-style cuisine thrown in. The main body of restaurants are in Beret and Baqueira, with 2 more in Bonaigua.

Non-skiing activities

Walking tours, snowshoeing, dog sledding, ice skating, swimming and a ten-pin bowling alley are available.

Après, dining and nightlife

Après-ski and dining in Baqueira are predominantly brought to you by tapas bars - and there are plenty to choose from. Other restaurants can be found further down the valley if you want to make the trip. Nightlife starts late in Spain, not kicking off till after 11pm. Tiffany's is the most popular local nightclub along with Pacha (brought to you by the same group as those in Ibiza and London).

Family and ski school

Baqueira offers several kids clubs and ski schools catering for all levels. The Beret area is best for families and beginners, offering all kinds of services, from children's sleighs, children's snowparks on the slopes, and childcare (3 months to 2.5yrs) in the village. There’s also a beginners' ski area with lift passes at a reduced rate. Baqueira Beret’s ski schools offer a wide range of private and group lessons – downhill, snowboarding, telemarking, heli-skiing, disabled and cross-country (cross-country available only in Beret). The resort has over 300 international instructors who can give classes in English, Catalan, Spanish and French.
