Average time to visit

Kenya is a dry country, with regional variations in temperature and rainfall. On the coast, the weather is tropical with high humidity in April and May, and occasional monsoon winds. Inland (including the Central Highlands and Rift Valley) the climate is temperate. The long rains fall from March to May and the short rains fall from late October to December. The best time to visit is usually July to February, and the wildebeest migration usually occurs from mid-July to September.

Insider's View

The ideal place to relax and unwind either at the start or end of your holiday or in between safari. It really is a stunning remote island. I would highly advice a cultural trip to see and experience the local life and people.

The five open fronted thatched cottages are set on a small private island in Lake Baringo with breath-taking views across the lake to the Laikipia Escarpment. Samatian Island Lodge offers the perfect relaxing location mid-safari break.

Samatian Island Lodge is on a private island in the middle of the bronze waters of Lake Baringo. Accommodation is for between ten to twelve guests in five airy, open plan thatched cottages, each with its own bathroom and sitting area. The open design of the cottages provide welcome breezes while mosquito nets provide protection at night. In the rare event of a storm, waterproof blinds are let down to shut out the rain. One of these is a family cottage with two rooms, adjacent bathrooms and an upstairs stargazing deck and sitting area.

The dining area has a panoramic view of the lake, and there is a comfortable lounge area strewn with cushions and plenty of board games. Samatian's large infinity pool offers fabulous views of the lake with its backdrop of the rugged hills of Kenya’s arid Northern Frontier District.

At Samatian Island Lodge guests can do as much or as little as you like and activities include canoeing, wake boarding, birding around the lake, boat trips to the nearby Njemps & Pokot villages and visits to nearby Lake Bogoria. Guests can also arrange a scenic flight down the Great Rift where they are enchanted by its great arid plains, escarpments, rock formations, lakes, volcanoes and lava flows or this geologically diverse area.
