The main season is in January and February, when the weather is hottest and driest. At this time, the animals in the wildlife parks tend to congregate more around the watercourses, making them easier to spot.
Northern and eastern Kenya temperatures vary from highs of up to 40°C during the day to less than 20°C at night. Rainfall in this area is sparse and, when it does occur, is often in the form of violent storms. July is usually the driest month, and November the wettest.

Set amid tropical flowerbeds and surrounded by well-tended lawns, this double-story grand colonial farmhouse was built in the 1940s. A mere 15 minutes outside Nanyuki, it occupies a 146-hectare (361-acre) estate, and the sturdy, handsome house overlooks a pretty dam (where you'll spot a diversity of waterfowl) and affords views of Mount Kenya's peaks. It was recently salvaged from disaster thanks to a large-scale renovation. Restored to echo its days as a grand colonial house, it's been tastefully decorated with African and Eastern accents that set a formal tone. Yet the place is homey and intimate enough that you can't help but relax -- you're attended to by a dedicated staff, have full run of the estate (it's rented on an exclusive basis), and have the option of visiting various local parks and sanctuaries as you please. There are six bedrooms, all en suite and all comfortably, tastefully kitted out with furniture sourced from Lamu and as far away as Java. Get up early to witness the first rays lighting up Mount Kenya; take a long, languid breakfast on the wraparound veranda; and then spend your day loafing by the pool, saddling up for rides on a nearby ranch, or fishing for rainbow trout on the slopes of Mount Kenya - or even spend a couple of nights on the mountain in a log cabin.
