Karuizawa
An hour by train from Tokyo, Karuizawa is an upscale mountain resort at the foot of the active volcano Mount Asama. The cool air provides a welcome retreat from summer heat and there are plenty of activities to enjoy including cycling, hiking, golf and winter skiing and ice skating. A former post town on the Nakasendo Trail, the town offers a variety of stylish shopping and dining opportunities.

Karuizawa is located along Japan’s Romantic Road, a scenic route passing through beautiful natural scenery, onsen resorts and interesting towns. For urban delights, head to the resort’s Ginza area, a local version of the upmarket shopping district found in Tokyo whilst the elegant Hoshino Resort west of the town offers relaxation in hot spring baths.
