Karuizawa
An hour by train from Tokyo, Karuizawa is an upscale mountain resort at the foot of the active volcano Mount Asama. The cool air provides a welcome retreat from summer heat and there are plenty of activities to enjoy including cycling, hiking, golf and winter skiing and ice skating. For urban delights, head to the resort’s Ginza area, a local version of the upmarket shopping district found in Tokyo while the elegant Hoshino Resort west of the town offers relaxation in hot spring baths.
