An hour by train from Tokyo, Karuizawa is an upscale mountain resort at the foot of the active volcano Mount Asama. The cool air provides a welcome retreat from summer heat and there are plenty of activities to enjoy including cycling, hiking, golf and winter skiing and ice skating.
