Best time to Visit

Good time to visit

Average time to visit

The best and most popular times to visit this area are the climatically stable seasons of spring (March to May) and autumn (late September to November). The highlight of spring is the cherry-blossom season, which usually arrives in Kyoto in early April. Bear in mind, though, that the blossoms are notoriously fickle, blooming any time from late March to mid-April. Autumn is an equally good time to travel, with pleasant temperatures and soothing autumn colours, which usually peak between late October and mid-November. Be warned that Kyoto is crowded with domestic and international tourists during the cherry-blossom and autumn-foliage seasons.

Of course, you can visit Kyoto at any time of year, although the summer, from June to August, can be very hot and humid, and winter can be a little chilly for some people’s taste.

Set amongst the forests of rural Japan yet just 90-minutes from Kyoto, the individual cottages of Miyama Futon and Breakfast offer an escape from the city and a chance to explore the countryside and its tiny hamlets.

This small bed and breakfast property sits in lush countryside surrounds, just 90-minutes from Kyoto but a world away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Four cottages offer accommodation for five to 15 guests in traditional surrounds, within reach of the thatched cottages of Miyama and the slow pace of life to be found in this rural area.

The individual cottages range from the new Kaya Villas to the 150-year old Hannabusa which dates from the Edo period. All combine traditional Japanese features such as tatami mats and futons with modern amenities such as flush toilets, bathrooms, and kitchens. The cottages are dotted throughout the countryside, enjoying a level of privacy that makes them ideal for couples, friends and families.

While a full breakfast is served each morning in the cottages, other mealtimes are left free, allowing you to make your own arrangements. By prior arrangement, ingredients can be ordered to allow you to prepare your own meals, or a range of specialities can be ordered in advance and prepared for you by local chefs. There are a number of restaurants in the area that can be reached by a short drive and these should also be reserved in advance.

Miyama is ideally explored at a slow pace, either by bike or on foot and the owners provide bicycles and maps to allow you to explore independently. Should you prefer a guide, escorted tours can be arranged. A number of traditional experiences offer an insight into the cultural life of the region, including Japanese cooking and making sticky rice cakes.

For a taste of rural life and a chance to experience the renowned thatched cottages of the region, Miyama Futon and Breakfast is a charming choice for families, couples and groups of friends.
