A short drive away is the picturesque seaside town of Sciacca. Every February it attracts people from all over Italy for its Carnival, one of the biggest in the country and a dazzling parade of colourful costumes and giant papier-mache figures.
Further south along the coast is the ancient town of Agrigento, founded in 582BC by Greek settlers. Here you will find the unforgettable Valley of the Temples, a UNESCO World Heritage site, with the remains of eight Greek temples. In July, their illuminated columns make a beautiful backdrop to the annual Blues & Wine Soul Festival. Another spellbinding ancient site are the Ancient Greek temples at tranquil Selinunte.
You can also soak up the simple pleasures of the countryside around the resort. Explore vineyards, olive and lemon groves, or find your own secret sandy cove. And don’t forget to take advantage of the resort’s 1.8km stretch of private coastline. Ask the concierge for more details of nearby walking routes and drives.

From the friendly and warm welcome, complete with a refreshing welcome drink, to the golf buggy shuttle drivers on request, and the attentive restaurant staff, the service here was excellent. The rooms are spacious and have a stylish contemporary dcor. All rooms have wonderful views over either the lawns or the golf course out to the sea, and ground floor rooms benefit from an outdoor patio area opening straight onto the grass, creating a lovely feeling of space. The special Verdura pizza in the resort's trattoria, Liola, was superb, and the breakfast selection is extensive, complete with local Sicilian specialities. The spa is extensive and extremely well equipped - the thassotherapy pools here are particularly unique and provide an extremely relaxing experience.

Verdura certainly lived up to my expectations; the rolling green hills of the golf course create the perfect rural setting for a relaxing break in the sun. Each room in the resort benefits from sea views, which can also be enjoyed from the main pool area and restaurants.
Throughout the resort there is a great sense of space; if you wanted a little time alone it certainly wouldnt be hard to find a little spot and forget anyone else was on the resort with you! The complimentary bikes really are the perfect little addition to help you find your way around the grounds too.
Like most of Sicily, Verdura prides itself on its food and rightly so. Fresh, local produce (some of it grown on-site) is used to create the mouth-watering menus in each restaurant. My personal favourite was Liola, the traditional Sicilian Trattoria, but you certainly must go to Zagara for the Michelin Star experience!
Verdura is an incredibly family-friendly property and parents can truly relax on holiday knowing their children are having a great time in very capable hands.
Whether youre going for the golf, a relaxing spa break, or just some family time in the sunshine, Verdura is such a flexible resort. With the lovely town of Sciacca just a fifteen minute drive away, its the ideal location for a Sicilian getaway.

Verdura is located in a beautiful location between Sciacca and Agrigento, the resort feels like a vast Sicilian estate with meandering paths and tracks through the two Championship golf courses. Even if you are not a golfer you can appreciate the manicured landscape leading up to the hotels main buildings.
The accommodation is sea front and all rooms look out to sea regardless of which type of room you are in.
The main restaurant and pool is a short walk from all rooms however if you dont fancy walking you simply pick up one of the free to use bikes on the resort to cycle around, these are a great way to explore the tracks and paths on the estate.
In regards to dining, you cannot go wrong with any of the restaurants, my favourite has to be Liola though which is the casual Sicilian homely style restaurant located near the golf club house (a short walk, cycle or buggy ride from the reception). They serve traditional cuisine using fresh and local ingredients, their menu features plenty of fish if you are a seafood lover! The style of the restaurant feels like a Sicilian home with pottery and beautiful tiled floors and walls. Zagara is the Michelin restaurant overlooking the pool which offers Sicilain fine dining, this is also the restaurant where many of the cookery classes take place I highly recommend doing one and make sure you pre-book! The classes not only teach you about technique and Verdura inspired recipes they teach you about the Sicilian food culture and emotion that they have with food.
Italians just know how to do family fun, and nowhere could be smarter or more sparkling with sophistication than Rocco Fortes beachside outpost on the south-west coast of Sicily. Few have cottoned on to it yet, but those who do have found sand as fine as sugar, New Yark-style mod cons and an excuse to dress up glamorously in the evenings. If you have children under four, your stark Olga Polizzi-designed room with wraparound seaviews will be rigged up with night lights and other crucial kit (cots, baby baths, mini bathrobes and slippers). There are bikes to borrow and children love zooming about even weaving through the poolside tables at dinner. The beach is an exquisite, bucket and spade playground with quiet time spend under white parasols. And then theres the all-round family entertainment; three immaculate golf courses (including a nine-hole where juniors can sign up for two hours of daily lessons), six floodlit tennis courts, an enormous, two-tiered swimming for dive bombing, a separate mini pool for toddlers and a kids club. The food cant fail to please, with pasta, pizza, burgers, beachside barbecues even a detox menu. One of the four restuarants, Buon Giorno, opens early for childrens dinners and highchairs and booster seats are standard, as are unbreakable colourful plates and cutlery.
The Italians really know how to do family fun. Damn it that the umbilically attached villas are sooo expensive. But, dont sweat it, the Olga Polizzi-designed rooms are as fabulous. What a blissfully rugged, pine-scented island, with inky-blue waters and an unfailing sea breeze. Yes its a big-bananas hotel, but it cleverly retains a sense of style and intimacy no whiffs of chlorine, nothing plastic or tacky. The sheer size and openness and raw beauty are an adventure, without being in the least bit hard to negotiate important if you are with brood or buggy. Days whirl by in a flurry: pools with a swimming instructor on call; a pretty pale beach of the sort you dont often find in the Med; floodlit tennis courts; bikes to borrow; and a free (yes free) kids club with excitements such as pottery and theatre. Teenagers can dump the grump there are cinema nights and a weekly party on the beach with enough gelato to sink a vaporetto. Meanwhile, the restaurants are sparkling and sophisticated, and the spa oozes serious wow factor. And, glory be, let the sun shine. Hot. At Easter. Yippee!

Your children will love our new Scott Dunn "Explorers" Children's Club - a short buggy ride away from the main hotel. There's a beautiful garden amongst the olive trees for the children, a sleep room, age-related playrooms and activities, plus access to the tennis and golf. Our nannies can also babysit exclusively for Scott Dunn guests (extra charge). All-in-all, the facilities for your children are superb and the safe, beach-style entry level to the main pool is a great pull.

Sicily is a gastronomic heaven - there are 13 Michelin star restaurants in Sicily and Verdura has it's very own 2 stars in "Zagara". Chef Fulvio Pierangelini demonstrates some superb dishes not only in his restaurant, but also in his cookery classes. His passion for food and wine is infectious and so is his enthusiasm for genuine, local ingredients.
Katherine Gotla (Staff)
This truly is a 5 star experience with impeccable "Rocco Forte" service.
Try the four Thalassotherapy pools - they range in temperature and saltiness, relax on the loungers whilst having a healthy juice, swim the 20m indoor lap pool with views onto the Sicilian hills, then indulge in a sauna or steam bath - at no extra cost.
Anne White (Staff)
I loved the immense amount of space you have at Verdura Golf and Spa resort - if you are travelling with a young family there is so many green areas where the children can happily play.
All of the rooms have lovely sea views and are tastefully designed with neutral colours and lots of natural colours. The food I had was good with lots of choice or restaurants and locations. There was lots of choice for breakfasts.
