Straddling the equator, Indonesia tends to have a fairly even climate year-round. Rather than four seasons, Indonesia has two – dry (between May to September) and wet (between October to April) – and there are no extremes of temperature between winter and summer. In most parts of Indonesia, the wet season falls between October and April and the dry season between May and September. December and January see Bali at its most humid and rain tends to come in sudden tropical downpours, but it can also rain for more prolonged periods.

The Oberoi is a wonderful property with traditional Balinese designed villas. The hotel is in fact one of the original luxury hotels in the area and is a great choice for guests who prefer a property with charm and character. The Oberoi is very much an oasis of calm and tranquillity, with beautiful lush gardens and a large central swimming pool. If you're looking for privacy, then opt for one of the private pool villas, where you'll be treated to a 10 metre swimming pool within the confines of your villa. The staff here are wonderful and make you feel like part of the family. The understated luxury of the hotel is also what makes it so special.

At 37 years old, this is one of the original hotels on Seminyak beach, so is quite a landmark in the town. Consequently when one girl said she had been working there for 6 years, she was actually "one of the new ones"! This means the team of staff at the hotel have a real family feel, which is reflected in their warm and enthusiastic service, always with a big smile. In true Oberoi style, it is very Balinese in design and not necessary a contemporary option. However you are in no doubt of where you are in the world, which for some more polished looking hotels, can be lacking. As one of the original hotels it is built on a large plot of land with only 74 rooms, which means you get to enjoy beautiful gardens and have a feeling of space.

Built in 1978 and is set slightly off the main road that runs through Seminyak, the Oberoi features the original private pool villas in Bali. The hotel feels old world, a real retreat with nothing to be heard but the sound of the sea and birds singing in the trees amongst the mature gardens. The Lanai rooms are in clusters of four in the traditional thatched Balinese style and are small but perfectly formed. The pools in the private villas are huge and utterly private surrounded by a high wall. The restaurants are lovely and the setting is beautiful, however the style of the property could seem a little dated to some, particularly if you consider its neighbours, the Legian and the Samaya. I really loved the gardens and layout of the Oberoi and it definitely captures the essence of traditional Balinese luxury, right on the beach in Seminyak. It would definitely appeal to the traditionalist
