Straddling the equator, Indonesia tends to have a fairly even climate year-round. Rather than four seasons, Indonesia has two – dry (between May to September) and wet (between October to April) – and there are no extremes of temperature between winter and summer. In most parts of Indonesia, the wet season falls between October and April and the dry season between May and September. December and January see Bali at its most humid and rain tends to come in sudden tropical downpours, but it can also rain for more prolonged periods.

Within the boundaries of West Bali National Park, Plataran Menjangan offers a wilderness eco retreat nestled in lush forest at the ocean’s edge. With just 17 tastefully appointed villas, it offers privacy and comfort to nature loving couples and families.

The 17 villas of Plataran Menjangan dot the forest of the Plataran L’Harmonie, an area of great natural beauty covering 382 hectares, and spread along 7km of untouched coastline. Sympathetically designed villas, traditionally constructed and featuring unique details such as delicately painted doorways and wooden verandas, blend into the landscape with paved walkways leading through the mangroves to the Ocean Club, spa and infinity pool.

Inside, the rooms are equally well thought out, with decor informed by Indonesia’s rich culture and history, while offering 21st century conveniences. Large canopied beds, rich furnishings and Indonesian artifacts created a homely space, while outdoor bathrooms and large terraces bring the natural surroundings to the fore, creating a comfortable retreat in a wilderness setting.

The Octagon Ocean Club, with its 360-degree panorama of the national park and ocean, serves Asian-inspired dishes and international cuisine, as well as fresh seafood, with both sunrise and sunset offering exceptional views. For a taste of the local flavour, Wantilan Open Kitchen features Balinese and Indonesian dishes with local ingredients, surrounded by the sights and sounds of the forest.

While the serene setting brings its own peace, a treatment at the Padma spa will intensify this sense of true relaxation. Asian and Western techniques combine to create a deep tranquility, while the sounds of the forest and stunning views over the ocean wash away any tensions. Combining luxury and nature, the infinity pool is an ideal spot from which to spy deer as they roam across the mangroves to the ocean.

Though Plataran Menjangan’s forest setting provides excellent opportunities to spot wildlife and birds from the terrace of your villa, with deer grazing between the trees, it has on its doorstep 175 species of plants and 167 species of birds, including the endangered Bali Starling. Spend a day with a bird keeper and learn how they protect this species, or discover the park’s nocturnal inhabitants on a night safari. For the more active, explore the park by bike and stop for a picnic lunch at one of the many breathtaking viewpoints.

Plataran Menjangan is perfect for couples looking for a peaceful retreat at the heart of nature.

The individual villas offer a good degree of privacy, being spread throughout the forested landscape. The One-bedroom Forest Villas, Luxury Ocean Villas, Ocean Mangrove Villas, and Two-bedroom Forest Villas, provide a high level of comfort in a wild landscape, while embracing the natural surrounds.

The Octagon Ocean Club is the focal point of the resort, with its lively restaurant, infinity pool and five-storey observation deck. Serving local dishes in a tranquil setting, Wantilan Open Kitchen offers a second dining option, while a range of additional culinary experiences can be booked, including visits to local markets, cooking classes, and safari picnics. For a post-nature walk indulgence, the Padma Spa features luxurious treatments in a picturesque setting.

While there is no beach as such, the exceptional infinity pool and ocean views more than compensate, and the resort offers an array of water-based activities, including snorkeling through the colourful coral off the Plataran Jetty, and taking a private cruise to discover nearby islands. The area is a paradise for nature-lovers, with guided safaris and opportunities to work alongside experienced park rangers and discover how they protect the flora and fauna of the park.
