Average time to visit

The climate in Greece is warm and sunny for the majority of the year with the risk of the odd shower of rain and some cooler periods over the winter. From April/May onwards the weather settles but it can sometimes be cool in the evenings. By mid/end of May, the weather generally settles in a pattern of long hot sunny days and balmy evenings especially in July and August when it can be very hot. Rain is unlikely but it can happen from time to time. May to October are particularly pleasurable months.

A once in a lifetime self-drive adventure, taking in the unique landscapes of the Peloponnese, the hustle and bustle of Athens with the peace and quiet of hiking in the hills and soaking up the abundance of Ancient Greek history that will surround you. After exploring the country's capital and heart of Ancient Greece, set off through the stunning country roads to authentic Greek hotels and experience a sedate lifestyle in the Peloponnese villages and rural hilltop communities.

  1. Fly to Athens

  2. Days 1-3: Athens, Greece

Start your Ancient Greek adventure in Athens, where you’ll explore the highlights of the city from the comfort of King George Palace, a luxurious retreat at the heart of one of the world's oldest cities. Known as the birthplace of western civilization and home of democracy, the modern city of Athens is interspersed with ancient Greek monuments and temples that have stood the test of time.

Spending two nights here, you'll have the chance to visit the world-famous Acropolis and its spectacular temples. With your private guide explaining the history of this iconic site, admire the impressive Parthenon, the Temple of Athena Nike and the Theatre of Dionysus Eleuthereus, thought to be the world’s first theatre.

    Accommodation: King George (2 nights)

  3. Days 3-5: Levidi, Peloponnese

It is now time to say farewell to Athens and begin your road trip to discover what the mythical Peloponnese has to offer. Drive the two hours through stunning landscapes to Villa Vager, a boutique, family-owned hotel located in the quaint village of Levidi. Rustic yet comfortable, the highlight here is the incredible views across the beautiful landscape. On the way, discover some of the most important centres of Greek history with your private guide. Learn about the Ancient Greek history spanning thousands of years at Mycenae and Epidaurus and discover the important role Nafplio has played in more recent years.

Here, in the central Peloponnese, you'll be surrounded by natural beauty, from tranquil lakes to peaceful fir forests. Spend your time hiking, kayaking or even quad biking through this stunning landscape.

    Accommodation: Villa Vager (2 nights)

  4. Days 5-8: Gerolimenas, Peloponnese

Continue south through the fascinating Mani Peninsula, an ancient region that has been remarkably well-preserved, home to unspoilt hilltop villages, Byzantine churches and rustic stone towers. Completely off-the-beaten-track and with barely any tourists to be seen, arriving in Mani is like stepping back in time to the real, authentic Greece.

Spend three nights at Kyrimai Hotel, located in the tiny town of Gerolimenas, nestled on the edge of the crystal-clear water. Throughout the quaint complex there are hidden terraces, peaceful courtyards and stone arches, with the effect that the hotel itself almost feels like a small village. It makes for the perfect peaceful getaway, while a variety of ancient sites are located nearby, just waiting to be explored. Head up into the hills to explore superb hiking paths and crumbling villages or make your way along the coastline to discover hidden coves and secret beaches. With breathtaking scenery around every corner, simply pick your favourite spot and enjoy the incredible views.

    Accommodation: Kyrimai Hotel (3 nights)

  5. Days 8-11: Monemvasia, Peloponnese

Finally, make your way east to Kinsterna Hotel & Spa, located on a hilltop overlooking the Aegean Sea. A rural hideaway located within a private estate of 15 acres, it has been lovingly restored to offer a selection of beautiful rooms which blend a contemporary style with traditional Grecian architecture. The hotel's grounds offer secluded corners where you can relax and enjoy the sea views.

Take some time to unwind before exploring impressive Monemvasia, a medieval walled town perched on the edge of a dramatic rock. Wander through the picturesque island's winding cobbled streets before climbing up to the fortress ruins, where spectacular views await to take your breath away. Another great excursion is to travel to the beautiful island of Elafonisos, where you'll have the chance to relax on some of this area's most picturesque beaches. Swim in the crystal-clear waters at Simos in the south and Aglyftis in the west. A true delight!
