Xian and the surrounding regions experience four distinct seasons and a continental climate. Summers are hot and humid, with maximum temperatures often above 40°C, however the monsoon season brings plenty of rainfall to temper the scorching heat. Winters are cool and dry, and not unpleasant for exploring the sights of the region, but cold weather clothing and layers are advisable as temperatures drop to freezing. Spring is pleasantly warm, with gentle breezes and long sunny days, making March through to May the best times to visit Xian. Autumn temperatures are similarly mild; however, September and October often bring frequent rain showers.

Contemporary hotels are a rare feature in China and the Sofitel feels as if it has been lifted from the pages of a design magazine. As well as the hotel's fabulous East meets West atmosphere, its location is perfect for exploring this ancient capital of China and the mystical Terracotta Army which is 45 minutes by car.
Each room at The Sofitel Xian on Renmin Square is extremely stylish with funky, contemporary decor and open-plan, designer bathrooms. For extra indulgence, take a room with Club Lounge access for intimate breakfasts and evening cocktails.

This is the second Sofitel in Xian, located in the same part of the city as the smaller and more expensive Sofitel Legend. This is the larger of the two and offers a great value base to explore the city. Its a great hotel for families with a large indoor pool and a good value buffet restaurant which caters really well for those who are little nervous of the more local cuisine to be found in town. The location is part of a small complex which is gated and includes a number of hotels, government buildings and gardens. It feels really secure and is a great choice for families and couples looking to save on the city sections of their itineraries.

Located just 15 minutes from the Islamic Quarter and night market The Sofitel on Renmin Square has a fantastic location inside the city walls. The Sofitel is a good classic option in the city and has many dining options to choose from however if you something a little more intimate I would recommend a stay at its sister property The Sofitel Legend.

Xian is synonymous with the Terracotta Warriors and they are absolutely amazing and a must do on any China itinerary. When you are there, make sure you also make time for a bike ride on the old City Walls as well. This was a complete surprise and so much fun and I think it is a great activity for all ages. We biked round the entire city wall, 14km altogether so a good work out and a great way to see the old city. The Sofitel is a welcome retreat to end the day, and with their stylish rooms, delicious dining options, as well as an excellent spa and indoor pool, it makes for a top pick in this historic city.

As you drive into the city of Xian you do start to wonder why you chose to visit... there just seem to be endless grey buildings and roads. But then you come to the Old Town's walls and can start to see the history of this important town - the beginning of the Silk Route. Sofitel is located within the Old Town walls and within walking distance of the Clock Tower which is the centre. There are 2 wings and you definitely want the West wing and ideally on the Club floor as the rooms are best. After my initial bad impressions I actually found Xian to be one of my favourite destinations in China as the terracotta warriors are so incredible, as is the Shaanxi History Museum in Xian, as there are so many well preserved artefacts. Xian is the dumpling capital and you can find some delicious food around here, but just be prepared that the menus are generally not in English so you have to point at pictures!
