Best time to Visit

Good time to visit

Average time to visit

From mid May through to early August the days are warm and clear but the night time temperatures can drop below freezing. September through to May is generally hot in the day and warm at night, Hwange sees rain from late November to April.

The best time for game viewing is from August to early November, water is scarce, the bush has died back and game congregates around the pumped waterholes. Birdlife is prolific during the rainy season, and although the game has dispersed due to readily available surface water, this is still a great time to experience Hwange as the National Park hums with life.

Itinerary

Let your excitement wander as we take you on an adventure through Zimbabwe. Feel the power of the cascading Victoria Falls and drift down the mighty Zambezi River on a boat cruise. Journey through Hwange National Park, encountering some astonishing wildlife and ending in a true wilderness area in south west Hwange. Staying in private concessions, you will really get off grid and immerse yourself in the wild.

  1. Fly to Victoria Falls

  2. Days 1-3: Victoria Falls - the Zim side

On arriving into Victoria Falls Airport, as you leave the airport you are likely see a group of tribal dancers, welcoming you into Zimbabwe! You’ll be met by your driver and transferred about 30 minutes away to Batonka Guest Lodge, which is a 5-minute drive from Victoria Falls. This is a quaint boutique lodge and an ideal place to unwind in the manicured gardens. After relishing on a delicious lunch and unwinding by the pool in the afternoon, head to the Zambezi River and board a boat. Drifting down this mighty river, you will enjoy drinks and nibbles whilst observing impressive herds of elephants ambling into the water to drink and bathe, with a backdrop of towering palm trees silhouetting against the sky as the sun begins to set.

The following day you can head to Victoria Falls where you can take a guided or self-guided tour of the falls, meandering through the paths and humid forests and taking in the beauty of the powerful falls, which is one of the seven natural wonders of the world.

Accommodation: Batonka Guest Lodge (2 nights)

  3. Days 3-5: Hwange National Park

Your safari awaits! This morning you will be road transferred to the remote north of Hwange National Park, your destination being Nehimba Lodge. The lodge sits on the edge of the mopane woodlands associated with the north of the park, with an abundance of wildlife within easy reach.  In the afternoon head out on your first game drive in an area where there have been sightings of lions taking down elephants. With Nehimba’s location on a private concession, you will have the thrilling experience of game driving through the wild at night; the spotlights are turned on and your guide will scan the bush for any wildlife movements in the hope of seeing the rare, nocturnal species.

The following day will be spent immersing yourself in this wilderness on game drives.  You will also have the opportunity to experience the ultimate nature walk; feel your senses awaken as you step out in the wilderness in search for animals, led by your expert walking guide. You will also get to appreciate the smaller details of the bush that you wouldn’t necessarily focus on during a game drive. Evenings will be spent enjoying spectacular sunsets on the deck, with huge herds of elephants gathering at the waterhole in front of the lodge.

    Accommodation: Nehimba Lodge (2 nights)

  4. Days 5-8: Hwange National Park

Today you will be game driven east through Hwange where you will board the Elephant Express for a scenic transfer to Bomani Tented Lodge. On arriving at the lodge you’ll be met by the staff, welcoming you into your home for the next three nights.  There are no rigid schedules at Bomani, so you will have the freedom to spend this afternoon at your own pace. Choose to head out on an afternoon game drive or opt to unwind by the pool, gazing out at a herd of buffalo congregating at the waterhole before heading out on a scenic sundown game drive, followed by a thrilling night safari. The following days here you will make the most of the wildlife in the area, keeping your eyes peeled for the ‘Big Five’. You can also visit a local village and school and be fascinated by their contrasting way of life.

Accommodation: Bomani Tented Lodge (3 nights)

  5. Days 8-11: Hwange National Park

Continuing west in Hwange, you will be game driven to Jozibanini, an exclusive camp in a truly untamed wilderness area, with the nearest lodge four hours away. As you head out on game drives through this south-western part of Hwange, you will notice a change in this semi-desert environment as you pass valleys well-trodden by elephants. Situate on a private concession, you will have the exhilarating experience of exploring the wild on a mountain bike, giving you a whole new perspective of the wildlife. Evenings will be spent lazing around a crackling campfire, listening to the sounds of elephants drinking in the nearby waterhole, under the midnight sky, glimmering with star constellations.
