Average time to visit
From mid May through to early August the days are warm and clear but the night time temperatures can drop below freezing. September through to May is generally hot in the day and warm at night, Hwange sees rain from late November to April.
The best time for game viewing is from August to early November, water is scarce, the bush has died back and game congregates around the pumped waterholes. Birdlife is prolific during the rainy season, and although the game has dispersed due to readily available surface water, this is still a great time to experience Hwange as the National Park hums with life.

Somalisa Expeditions is an authentic bush camp located in the heart of Hwange National Park nestled in a grove of acacia trees. With just six meru style tents, Somalisa Expeditions is the perfect camp offering a stylish yet authentic safari experience.
Somalisa Expeditions is the sister camp to the wonderful Somalisa Camp, set in an equally amazing location overlooking a seasonal flood plain. With just six Serengeti-style safari tents on raised decks, sleeping up to twelve guests, the camp is small and intimate with plenty of African charm. All tents are en-suite with running water including hot and cold showers. The bedrooms are beautifully furnished with wooden floors, light linens, combining colonial and cotemporary style throughout.
The main area of camp includes a lounge and dining area, also on raised decks, offering spectacular views across the bush and overlooking a small pool and watering hole. Elephants frequently come up to camp to drink and wallow in the pool and watering hole, making for some wonderful photographic opportunities.
A variety of activities are on offer from Somalisa. Game drives are led by qualified and experienced guides who are on hand to share their knowledge of not only any animals you might encounter, but also the flora and fauna of the park. Guests could also go on a walking safari, night drives, as well as game viewing from a hide where a host of animals could be spotted.
There are just six safari tents, each well spaced under the shade of the large acacia trees. The tents are twin bedded, with en-suite bathroom facilities that include running water.
Authentic meru style safari tents with en-suite facilities.
Children under the age of 6 are only accepted by prior arrangement.

I stayed at Zambezi Life Styles with my family in May 2011 for a three day safari spent on the Zambezi River. What an incredible experience. Having flown to Kanga Airstrip from Hwange, we spent 2 nights at African Bush Camps Kanga Camp, a 90 minute drive from Zambezi Life Styles. On to the river and the mobile camp. Zambezi Life Styles is in a dramatic location on the bank of the Zambezi River with incredible views of the river below and the Zambezi Escarpment beyond. The tents were comfortable and spacious for a mobile camp, service was excellent and our food was tasty and freshly prepared. The stand out part of any experience in this location is the activities on offer. Our guide, coincidentally called Fisher, was one of the best I have had the pleasure of being guided by. His guiding brought the bush to life. Well travelled and with a great sense of humour he added so much to our experience. Walking, canoeing, game drives, fishing, we covered it all. He tested our tracking skills and our knowledge of the bush so that we left looking forward to our next visit.
