Average time to visit

In general the best time to visit Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam as a whole is between October and March however there are regional variations and you can visit year round. April and May can get quite humid before the monsoons arrive. During the wetter season of July and August, rainfall tends to be short and sharp and the remainder of the day usually remains quite sunny. Vietnam's coastline is at its best between January and September.

Insider's View

Hoi An is easily one of the region's greatest historical towns, brimming with charm.

Hoi An is world famous for its shopping and tailors - make sure you head to the tailors at the beginning of the week so you have time to pick up your garments.

Hanoi's old town is glorious and full of wonderful markets and boutiques - let us know if you'd like a shopping guide for the afternoon to show you the best it has to offer.

I'd really recommend Hibiscus Spa in Luang Prabang - it is simple but very pretty and they offer fantastic treatments.

I loved getting away from the crowds by visiting Angkor Wat at sunrise with my specialist guide - it was as though nobody else was there! I'd definitely recommend getting up early.

Try L'Elephant or 3 Nagas for some of the best food in Luang Prabang.

For active teenagers or couples try some of our more adventurous activities such as our cycling tour of Luang Prabang and Angkor temples, quad biking near Siem Reap and kayaking on Tonle Sap Lake.

This enchanting journey takes in the best of Indochina, in style. Spend four nights cruising along the Mekong for a unique perspective of Vietnam and Cambodia, explore Angkor Wat with our finest guides, unwind in idyllic Luang Prabang and end up on Vietnam's glorious coastline to relax and unwind near the authentic town of Hoi An.

  1. Days 1-3: Saigon

Your trip begins in Ho Chi Minh City, also known as Saigon. This vast metropolis is Vietnam's largest and most modern city, full of lively shopping streets and famous for its rooftop bars. We suggest taking a tour guide for your first exploration in this bustling city, who will be able to steer you through the chaos to find the most famous landmarks, such as Notre Dame Cathedral and the fascinating War Remnants Museum.

Accommodation: Park Hyatt Saigon (2 nights)

  2. Days 3-7: Mekong Delta

After two nights you'll embark on a four-night cruise from Saigon to Phnom Penh in Cambodia. Stopping en-route at local villages and winding through luminous scenery, this leisurely journey will give you a deep insight into the area's diverse history and gracious cultures. It's our preferred way of getting from Vietnam into Cambodia and certainly beats flying!

    Accommodation: Aqua Mekong (4 nights)

  3. Days 7-9: Phnom Penh

Once in Phnom Penh you'll have plenty of time to explore. Learn about its turbulent but inspiring history and enjoy its beautiful restaurants, cafes and boutiques alongside your enthusiastic guide who will reveal to you the local style of the area. The city has an arty feel and is developing quickly into one of Southeast Asia's greatest capitals.

Accommodation: Rosewood Phnom Penh (2 nights)

  4. Days 9-13: Siem Reap & Angkor Wat

From Phnom Penh it's a short flight to Siem Reap, a charming town and entry point to Angkor Archaeological Park, the home of the majestic Angkor Wat. We recommend two days of temple touring, once with your guide to the lesser known and quieter temples in the further corners of the complex, and then again to join the crowds watching the sun rise over Angkor Wat and its reflecting pools. Our guides are experts at steering you away from the masses, so will be able to take you to the more popular temples when they are at their least busy. We have also included a private boat trip on Tonle Sap lake where depending on water levels you can explore a floating village and enjoy a delicious lunch in amongst the tranquil flooded landscape.

    Accommodation: Phum Baitang (4 nights)

  5. Days 13-16: Luang Prabang

From Siem Reap it's another flight to hop over the border into Laos and landing in Luang Prabang, easily one of Asia's finest historic cities. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Luang Prabang has been brilliantly preserved with glittering golden temples, white-washed French villas and soaring mountains and rivers that provide the most breath-taking backdrop. We definitely recommend you take a day to visit Kuang Si waterfall, the iconic cascade of sky-blue water a short drive from the town. Here you can swim in the calm lower pools, or hike up to the top of the main fall to witness the incredible view from the top. We have also included a full day tour of the town, taking you to locations such as the elegant Wat Xiengthong, the Royal Palace, and finishing off your day with a quick scramble to the summit of Mount Phousi or to sit and listen to the evening chanting of saffron-clad monks as the sun goes down.

Accommodation: Belmond La Résidence Phou Vao (3 nights)

  6. Days 16-18: Hanoi

After three nights in Luang Prabang you'll take another quick flight to Vietnam's capital, Hanoi. Busy but gracious and historic, Hanoi is truly unique with a wonderful old town full of crumbling old tea shops, temples and vibrant markets. Your guide will be able to take you to key locations such as Ho Chi Minh’s mausoleum and the Temple of Literature, where university students flock to pray and make offerings around their exam time.

Accommodation: Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi (2 nights)

  7. Days 18-22: Hoi An

Finally, it’s time to relax with some well-earned time on the beach with a flight to Vietnam’s central coast. With a range of spoiling resorts to choose from on the pristine China Beach you may simply relax here or alternatively head into Hoi An, another UNESCO World Heritage town that's brimming with charm and authentic boutiques and restaurants. We have included a fun walking tour of the town to visit backstreets and beguiling markets, as well as an easy cycle tour of a nearby island village where you can meet friendly local people and try your hand at some traditional crafts.

Accommodation: Four Seasons Resort The Nam Hai Hoi An (4 nights)
